I'll be moving in a few weeks and I have to tow one of my vehicles. I'm renting a 26' deisel truck from Penske with a car carrier. According to their website, I can't put my GW on it. Considering ga$ mileage (I'm moving about 900 miles), I'd prefer to tow the GW and drive my Lexus ES300. Has anyone towed a GW on one of these car carriers?

I have not tried it myself, but according to the owners manual, as long as you disable your differentials by putting your 4WD in neutral (floor shifter), you should be ok.

If you're talking about a trailer versus dolly...a GW will fit on the U-haul version as I've seen photos of same here on the site. I think it's more of a liability exercise with U-haul...likely same for Penske. If there's an accident and the towed vehicle is not within their guidelines (probably weight), they'll decline to rent. Just happens that I went through this exercise yesterdauy. Rented a U-haul car "transporter" in Fort Worth and dragged one of my cars down to Houston to put it on a ship. Nice trailers..tow well.

I called my insurance company and asked if they'd cover the trailer if I wrecked it. My company said yes, within the limits of my deductable. I was towing one of my Bitter SC cars and it wasn't in their computer so U-haul didn't want to rent the trailer...so I said, OK it's a Mustang. Bingo. (I declined their coverage).

As an aside, the ol' truck got about 8 mpg towing, and did about 13 mpg sans trailer at a solid 75 mph on the return trip. I expected worse. Love those rear disk brakes, by the way!

I towed one of my GW's from Colorado to Alabama about 8 years ago on a UHaul dolly. It did fine.

Tell them you have an XJ and forget about it. If the Jeep has bigger than about a 31" tire you will probably have to air down the front tires to get the straps to fit around them.

We pulled our 82 wag from OH to NY on a Budget trailer. They even thought they knew the vehicle that was going. Maybe the books didn't go to 82 so say its an 86 or something when the GW was an xj option and it'll pop up first.

Haven't tried towing a waggy with a dolly, but towed my 79 wagoneer on a uhaul trailer from bay area CA, to Canada with no problems. The tire straps they supplied barely fit over my 33's so I added some of my own tiedowns for extra safety. Told them it was a grand cherokee and away I went.
