Dude,
PTO means Power Take Off, meaing that a drive shaft that runs off your Tcase powers your winch. All you need is a PTO port on your Tcase, a PTO unit (the thing that you can bolt onto your tcase and it turns a shaft,) a shaft that runs from your PTO unit to the winch, and then a PTO winch.
The other winch alternatives are
Hydrolic
Electric
In my opinion PTO is the way to go. Its hard to find PTO winches, but you can get a ton of power to them, you don't need to mount a hydolic pump on your engine, and you can pull harder and longer then an electric (usually).
Depending on what Tcase and transmission you have, you may or may not have a PTO port.
The T-18 transmisssion has a PTO port (I think)
The D20 Tcase has a PTO unit that can be installed
Some of the NP Tcases have PTO ports ( not sure which ones do or do not.)
In my opinion PTO winches are awsome and they fit pretty good into the old FSJ motiff. Anyone can have an electric winch, but PTO winches, like old FSJ's are old, ugly, tough and nearly unstopable.
Just my thoughts. I am in the process of installing an old PTO winch on mine. Will let you know how it turns out.

You won't want a PTO if you often get stuck in situations where you can't run your engine. Like in a lake, on a hill when your carb is flooded, or something like that. One of the advantages of electrics is all you need is a good battery and having nothing blocking your winch. But most of us probably spend more time pulling other people out anyway :D as well as pulling trees and other things that just don't want to move ;)

That will not work anyhow, your TF727 trans or your NP229 T-case has no provisions for a PTO unit. unless you want to invent a drive system off your front pully, I would forget it.
