View Full Version : NP 208 Question

I bought that NP 208 on ebay, the owner wasn't sure what it was or what it came off of. All I know is it's driver's side drop and has 23 splines on the input (has an adapter on it already) Does this mean that it'll bolt to my 727 or do other trannys have the same 23 spline output...and it's possible I have the wrong adapter?? Will the adapter that's on my 229 work if the one I have is wrong? Can I use the 229 shift lever? (I know they're marked differently) Lastly, is the REAR driveshaft the only one that has to be lengthened? I would appreciate any info anyone has on this subject.

very one keeps saying that the 229 , 208 ,219 are all closely related but im not sure about your 727

I know they're related (lol) but my question is, if this 208 I have came off of let's say a T-176, will it bolt to my 727 using the same adapter, and if NOT, will the adapter that's on my 229 bolt up to it and mate it to the 727 that's in my wag.

It should bolt right up to your 727 since the 727 output is 23 spline. Of course there is a chance that the bolt pattern is not the standard 6 bolt circle but I doubt it. The front driveshaft length stays the same but the rear needs to be lengthened or just get the shaft from a junkyard Jeep that had a 208. Also, don't count on using the 229 shifter for the 208. You might can hack it up and make it work but it would definitely be nice to have the stock 208 shifter. BTW, you're gonna have to cut a hole in the floor of your jeep to mount the 208 shifter. I did the same exact swap on my '88. Here's a pic of the shifter once I cut the hole and mounted it.

Hey andrew did you have any clearence problems between the floor and the Trans when mounting your shifter? Or did you have a body lift to give you space? Just wondering for when I go to put my shifter in..

the manual tranny 208 shifter will not have any clearance issues with the 727 or floorpan. i had one like that in my 83 j20.

the 208 behind an auto tranny from the factory had the same plastic flag shifter as the 229,so you can reuse that if you dont want to add the floor shifter.

you will get into some different "stickout length" issues of the input gear when you deal with the 231 and 242 in the little jeeps, but luckily for us the jeep 208 was exactly the same unless it wasn behind a t18 in a 80+ j20. that one will have 31 splines, but all the rest will have 23 and the same stickout length for the input gear,so you can take an xfer from a t176 and bolt it to a 727 or 904 no prollem.

if the case you bought has a slip rear yoke its from a dodge  if its fixed it is from a jeep. dodge also used the same circle pattern and 23 spline input,so they are interchangeable as well.

mechanic58,it will fit,i promise smile.gif

like the guys have said, your front shaft will work, the rear will need to be 6" longer. yuoll need factory 208 "flag" linkage,or install a cool manual tranny lever like rockjeep44. that or youll just hafta crawl under it to shift in/out of 4wd ;)

Mechanic. A drive shaft from a late 70's rig with a quadratrac will work for you driveshaft.

Rockjeep44, What shifter is that in your picture? What do they come in and how do I get one?

that shifter is used on a 208 that is behind a manual tranny in an 80 and up j10/j20,wag or chero.(t176,t5,t18)

to aquire, keep eyeballs peeled for rigs parting out with a manual tranny, and scrouge wrecking yards.

you will need to get the shifter and mounting stuff, the linkage rod,and the arm on the xfer case,as it is differet than the arm on 208s that are hooked to the flag shifter

Bummer! I don't think a manual transmission FSJ was ever purchased anywhere around Houston. I go out to the yards here pretty frequently and I have yet to come across any manual transmission equipped FSJ's. I have never seen a 258 powered one around here either.

Ok guys, leaning a few things here. I'm not concerned about the linkage...I did well in geometry. I'll get that figured out. My main concern is bolting it to my 727. Here's the link to the page on ebay where there's some pics of it. The adapter that's on it doesn't look familiar to me. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2401453729

that is the adapter from a t176.obviously,you will unbolt this adapter and bolt the t case to your 727s existing adapter.

it will fit,i promise smile.gif

Okey DOKE. Thanks for your help guys. Anyone need a working 229? I'm not too interested in shipping it, but if someone wanted to come get it I'd make you a DEAL. :)

But sorry i have already got the shifter and linkage and the driveshaft.. but there is a 208(don't know condition, shifted in and out of gears while still in the truck) and a manual mated to a 258 if you are interested
