My Transfer case is currently in 4 wheel drive, but when i switch to 2 wheel I get this ratchet noise from what seems like the front end.And no power. i have to turn the wag off and then engage into 4 wheel. any ideas? I have the 229 tc with the vacuum axel.

Yes, your front disconnect axle is not reconnecting sufficiently. You have to be stopped, and the front axle has to be properly engaged, before four-wheel drive will work.
Others will have to help you on diagnosing and repairing the front disconnect; it's an '83-'84 only setup.
