I have searched for the last couple of days and still havent answered my many questions, so here we go-
When I bought my 83 J10, the flag shifter for the verified 229 was in the up position. The 2wd/4wd selector for the verified vacD44 was in the 4wd position. And there is no front driveshaft. The front yoke is tied stationary with bailing wire. The driveshaft wont fit because of the headers that were on there when I bought it. There is no clunking or anything like that. The truck drives fine. I doubt there is vacuum going to either the case or front diff, but I have not checked.
Here are my questions-
1-Is my transfer case shot?
2-Is my vicous coupler shot?
3-If I have to replace the case, what direction should I head? I know this setup is not for heavy offroading so I am thinking about other options even if my stuff is broke.
I have the front driveshaft, just waiting on exhaust parts to get rid of the headers so I can install the shaft.

If its shot, I am gonna go ahead and start building my dream drivetrain, who knows how long that will take. Let me know how much but I know shipping would kill me.

It sounds to me like there is nothing wrong with your 229. If it's working now, it's probably ok. However, you should get all the elements in working order and put the front shaft back in
My 229 literally came apart inside and would not work in any gear, hi-low range, 2 or 4wd. When we cracked the case we found that the snap ring that retains the VC had broken, when I put the rig in reverse it unloaded the VC and came unglued. It was toast. I was stuck in the street in front of my house.

Thank you soooo very much, as soon as I get the exhaust straight, the front shaft is going in and I will see what happens.
Trying very hard to get this thing half-way reliable to go to URE

Just don't shift that case without a front driveshaft. If it's running right now, LEAVE IT as is until you get the front end hooked up.

Ok, but it is already in the up position which is low and the selector is in 4wd. The front yoke on the 229 spins freely.
Argh!

Could your shifter be out of adjustment? Is the t-case IN low range?
If you put it in gear and stomp on the pedal and get whiplash, you're in low range. :D
No whiplash, you're in 2WD High range.

Check the linkage underneath. It sounds mis-aligned. BTW, make sure the wheels are chocked REALLY WELL. If you put the t-case in neutral, the parking pawl from the transmission will have NO EFFECT and the truck is free to roll. (Assuming your parking brakes doesn't work like most of our trucks!)
