I may have a line on a mid 70's 401 in an IH pickup.

And, I have read that that is actually the AMC 401. Something about AMC selling some motors to IH..

Is that true, or am I an dreamland??

It's an AMC 401, but if I recall correctly it has a 2bbl manifold.

you could swap for your manifold from you 360 though could you not

Yes, the manifolds are good for all 304-401 V8's

This sounds like some GREAT news though... With a little luck, I will be able to sweet talk my way into a free 401..

Yeah, you have correctly ID'd the 401 goblins...

Regarding the motor.. I dunno anything about it. I was on the way out my inlaws house tonight and my father-in-law said that a guy he knows is trying to offload the truck. This is the same guy that dropped off 2 AMX's at my in-laws house and said "give me what you think they are worth when you get around to it"... One of them is the hot rod 401 model that is currently (for the past 3 years) undergoing a FULL professional frame off custom resto.. The 401 is built for 485hp and 485 lbs tq IIRC..

ANYWAY, now that I have confirmed that the motor is what I thought it was, I will get some more details..

IF IF IF, I end up with it, I would give it a rebuild regardless of condition (unless already freshened up..) before I put it in. I would want it as reliable as possible, so it would just get the standard rebuild. Meaning:
Bore ONLY if required
Cam of course
maybe roller rockers
and what ever is cheap, easy, and smart while I have it out

Plus, all the stuff that I will be able to swap off of my 360
4bbl intake and carb
Headers
HEI
MSD
ect...

Actually, now that I think about it... Since I HAVE To pull my tranny soon, I am thinking that would be a great time to swap in a new motor..

SO, I suppose as long as I got to hear it run first, I could always just toss it in and worry abou the rebuild later..

If you look closely at the veh. listing on gasket kits for AMC 360s, IH 400's are listed too..;)

Bulltear makes a load of nice little go fast parts too. I have a bunch..on a shelf somewhere..

IH used the 401 in 1974 pickups and travelalls, listed as 400's, chk the block for 401 numbers to be sure.
amazingly the junkyard books list the engines together but were listing the IH blocks for half what the jeeps were, but are the same motor.

Yep. I had a buddy that worked for Harvester and that's what happened.

Goblins? More like the Hunt brothers of 401's :D

Goblins?

Meaning those who gobble up all the 401's...

Not meaning:
An evil or mischievous spirit; a playful or malicious elf; a frightful phantom; a gnome.

HOWEVER, if the dictionary definiton fits...  ;)

I understood from reading on this forum sometime ago, that the accessory brackets (alternator in particular)
IH used on the motors they bought from AMC are far superior than those used by AMC.
Also, that 401 may have came with a 2BBL intake that was also a better piece than other 2BBL intakes used by AMC.

Yes IH did buy AMC 401's in 1974 due to a engine plant strike. It was a easy option for them as they had already had a good working relationship with AMC as they were buying 232's and 258's since 1970 for the Scouts because it was cheaper for them to drop their 196 4cyl and buy those engines from AMC. In 1974 their main engine plant went on strike for 9 months meaning their were not enough 345 and 392 engines to go into everything they produced. IH did extensive tests with different engines and decided that the 401 would be the best option to go into the Travelall's and pickup trucks so they could save the heavier duty 345 and 392's for the larger IH vehicles like school buses and dump trucks. They did test a few 401's in the large applications and pretty much all of them failed under extreme use where the IH engines were designed to operate. Most of the vehicles you find the 401 in are 2wd 1974 Travelall's but some of the stock was left over and you could still get one in early 1975 as well. They were all 2 barrel engines with Holley 2210 emissions carburetors on them and they were only offered with the torqueflite 727 automatic transmission behind them. Their was also no 4wd option with the 401 engine which IH called the "IH 400" as they already had a actual IH 401 engine that they had been using for years in heavy duty applications.

This is great info thanks!! I should find out soon if I can get my hands on it.

You have got to be kidding right?

The question IS NOT "How do I identify a 401"...

The question IS "Is the AMC 401 the same as the IH 401"

That question was anwsered long before your smart @ssed comment that has nothing to do with the question...
