I am in need of your assistance folks. I noticed yesterday on the beach that my 229 was whinning a little bit. This morning I checked the fluid and it is almose empty, it took 2 quarts of ATF. I am thinking Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley! I take it out for a ride around the block and the truck is in a cloud of smoke, not oil smoke, ATF smoke! I am leaking where the case that has the speedometer gear and covers the outputshaft for the rear drive shaft connects to the main case(looks like 4 bolts) is leaking like a pig, and being carried over to my hot Cat Converter. What would be involved in changing the gasket for this, am I going to have to remove the output shaft and speedometer cable gear, if so I am just going to let somebody else do it? Please let me know what is involved, the fishing is starting to get good and I need 4WD to get to the jetty. TIA!

You'll have to unbolt the rear yoke and pull the speedo-gear, but that's no big deal. It's the easiest gasket on that thing to replace. Lucky you!
