Welcome to IFSJA,

Timing cover is where your oil-pump gears & timing chain are located. Aluminum casing... can cause low oil pressure if it's scoured. Your oil-pump filter hooks-up to it. Lowest price I've seen is @ www.quadratec.com (http://www.quadratec.com) for $205 + S&H smile.gif

It's the "front cover" on the front of the engine, and actually covers the timing chain. Being a chev guy in disguise, the first thing I noticed on these "unique" amc v-8's is that everything attaches to the timing cover. The fuel pump, distributor, water pump, oil pump, (did I leave anything out?). The cover to the block gasket is also a typical oil leak area. The reason the oil pressure is related is because the gears on the oil pump "scour" or wear the casing, which is an itegral part of the timing cover, and when the clearance becomes to much, pressure drops. Being a part of the timing cover, the only way to rplace it is to replace the whole cover, a big chunk of aluminum that costs $$.
