Thanks to the PO I have a bunch of paperwork on the Cherokee I just got. My first reaction is that these things were expensive! Here's the Window sticker for mine:

And if that wasn't enough here's a little "stick-it-to-ya":

That's about $35,000 in today's dollars!

Holy crap! My J-10 was only like $6-7k in '83. Course it was about as plain as could be.

the $148 must of been for the dealer rustproofing.
dang 12K mile warranty........now the answer of why AMC went broke.
The sales invoice for my 67 Glad was $4021, including the Ramsey PTO Winch, cop lights and west coast mirrors.

Even the CJs were expensive, if you loaded them up with options.
I bought a '73 CJ-5 in 1973 for $4400. For that amount of money, I could have had a BMW 2002tii... a swanky car, even then. My CJ-6, bought two years later, was about $1200 more, though the hard top probably added 2-3 hundred to the price.
The Wagoneers especially were considered a cushy ride - a 'cowboy Cadillac.'

We found the build sheet in Krista's 77 a year or so after we started driving it. Compare the Hydramatic & QT w/lo range prices...
Hers actually had a bench seat and standard steel wheels with hubcaps too. Maybe some swaparoonie the dealer did...

This is the reciept for our purchase in 2000

Can you say "TF727 and NPxxx in 1980?"
Anybody got a later sticker with the TF727/NPxxx option cost?

Wow so in 2 years the cost of the QT/low range went up 4X and a 360 in 79 cost 4X what a 401 did in 77. Was AMC hurting for money or what???
BTW, I meant to post this in General Discussion. Maybe a mod can move it.....:D

I vaguely remember a 1983 Waggie Brougham tipping the scales at $14,000 plus. Way too rich for a poor little Staff Sgt in the USAF! At that point, the $6300 Mustang was about all I could afford.

Justin, there was some pretty heavy inflation going on around those years. Prices for everything went up drastically, kinda like right now...

I don't have a picture of the build sheet, nor do I have the Wagoneer anymore, but I owned a 1982 Limited that was just over $20,000 when it was new!!! It was loaded to the gills. The ONLY option it did not have, was the sunroof!
I bought it in 1985, with 100,000 miles, grinding brakes, leaky tires and a rod knock for $4000 (The book on it back then was like $13,000) I was a full time mechanic at the time, so I had many connections with parts and machine shops. $2000 later it looked like a new ride at 1/2 the price! I drove that sucker for 10 years, then sold it to my cousin who drove it up until about 2 years ago, when it met an untimely death when it crossed paths with a big mule deer going 70mph. The windows were down at the time and there were actually "deer parts" inside the Jeep!

Ya but I can sorta see that. My 79 Cherokee did not have an 8-track, leather interior, power windows, locks or seats, sunroof. It was by no means a luxury machine, but I'm guessing it cost as much as a Caddy did.

Pic of my mom with Big Red (as she called it) right after she bought it in 1978. I think the sticker was around $12,000. She also bought me a 76 CJ-5 for $4600.00 at the same time.

My Dad bought a Wagoneer new in 1967 for less than $4,000. He then bought his Waggy in 1972 for $6,200 and felt buyers remorse for a long time (like 3 years). In 1976 he shopped for a new Wagoneer and was appalled by the pricing and crappy trade in value. The dealer tried to sell him a bare bones Cherokee for considerably less, but he felt it would have been too much trouble to load up a family of 10 with just 2 doors and rear window. He bought a used '73 Waggy that year and swore he'd never buy a new one of these ridiculously overpriced heeps again.;) Good thing he didn't go shopping for one after Chrysler got their mits on them. ;)

My '79 Chero with 360, T15, S package, 31x11.5" tires on 10" rims, a/c, track-loc, tint, cargo carpeting, and the worthless rustproofing, was $8,550. Bought in Bay Shore LI from Bay Shore AMC Jeep Inc, Jan 29 '79.

The main difference between the two is that the Wagoneer already included a 360 2bl non-low range QT, so it's just an upgrade for the low range unit, where as the Cherokee is upgrading from a 258 w a three speed stick D20 combo...hence the price difference in the options.

i wonder what mine was back in the day. 79 cherokee 'chief' package, but completely bare bones inside with manual everything... only options would have been the 360/th400/q-trac but it didn't even have the low range!

Official inflation numbers are not very accurate... I think it's a way for the goverenment to weasel out of social security obligations.

Not much. If you look at just about every luxury car most have VERY poor resale value. Basically the people that buy luxury cars, want NEW cars. So once they go to sell it it's really not worth any more than your basic car of the same vintage.
