Does any one know if there is a difference between chrysler 360 and amc 360? If there is, how can I find out which block I have?

Lot of difference. Main noticeable thing is oil filler tube on front of intake manifold, Chrysler has distributor in back. If your wondering if you have an AMC or Chrysler 360 in a GW built by Chrysler, it's an AMC still.

AMX factor, I had the engine and tranny rebuilt by two different shops. After it was all back together, the engine shop drove it for the first time, about 2 miles and punched a hole in the side of the t-case. After seeing the cost of new, I bought a used one. After tranny shop installed, on test drive it made a loud "whirring" sound, kinda like going real fast in reverse. Tranny guy says t-case needs to be rebuilt. I called a local Jeep parts guy who had an exact t-case that was just removed from a waggy that was driven around the lot. I have this one installed, same noise. Tranny shop pulls out tranny, tears it down and rechecks everything ok. Puts it on dyno under heavy tork, no noise. #-weeks later and all new u-joints, another new torque converter and a tranny that has been in and out half dozen times, and now tranny guy says he thinks the block was switched to an amc block because the tranny bolts dont line up. I said why did you not notice this on any of the previous changes in/out and he doesnt have an answer, but thinks the engine wanted the "rare" amc block and made a swap. I find this hard to believe, but I am stuck in the middle now. Are there any stampings on the block that will determine what is here?

oh man...

what was the block that your engine rebuilder used?

what did the tranny came from that your tranny shop "rebuilt?"

AMC blocks are by no means rare, there are tons of them everywhere.

What year FSJ do you have?

if you have an fsj built after 1977,there were only 2 stock motors. the amc 360 v-8 and the 258 i-6. all cryco wags 88-91 came factory equipped with the rare amc 360 v-8. :D below the exhaust on the block will be the numerals 360 cast into the block.they're about 2" high. your mechanic is trying to put one over on you.

If it's spitting, sputtering, smoking and stalling, it's an AMC. Oh wait, Mopars do that too. ;)

If your distributer is in the front its an AMC (as it SHOULD be) Now, if the tranny shop used a chrysler TF727, no, it wont bolt up. As the AMC TF727 used a different housing that would bolt to AMC engines ONLY.

You will have the AMC engine, that is all that was used. I looked into your profile and see you have an 84. This can cause you lots of grief since the front axle is vacume operated and the amount of work done to your rig, would not be hard to believe that vac lines were hooked up wrong. My guess is that the T-Case is junk. If in 4 wheel drive and the front axle does not lock, the noise and sympthoms you are hearing and have would be the T-Case KILLING itself.

Oh yeah, good point pete. Forgot 84 had the VC front axle. It would also feel like the tranny is slipping.

$'s to donut's the trany shop, has tried to put a chrysler 727 trany in your
jeep, rather than the AMC patterned 727 that it came in with.

so is the displacement the only similarity between these engines? Or do they in fact share some internals?

Nothing is shared - they are completely different animals.

Find a new mechanic....uhh, I mean technician.

I had argument with the parts monkey at the local AutoZombie (Autozone)...he insisted my 88' had a Chrysler 360....he wouldn't sell me AMC stuff. I flew him my salute and have never been back! What an Azz.

Where in Northern IL. are you?? If I am close, I could take a look at it for you. Also, I wouldn't want to encounter the Mechanic OR the tranny guy you are using. Could one other possibility be that they installed the spacer on the end of the cranckshaft when they did the engine rebuild?? The spacer was for the TH400, I think.

How far did you drive with the whirring sound? I installed a gear reduction unit on mine. The unit had been sitting in the garage for several years and made a whirring sound for a while after I installed it. It soon went away.

Thanks for all the responses and info. guys, it all helps. Jeepguzzi, I live in Dundee. The jeep is at a tranny shop in Wheeling. I have not called him yet today, I was waiting to check this post to see what all you guys had to say. Now I am waiting for my wife to leave the house so I can rip this guy a New One... Can I get ahold of you later to see about hooking up? Thanks again Fellas, Dave
