Hello, i'm trying to upgrade my axles in my ZJ and i was just curious what axles come stock in waggys. This guy i know wants to sell me a d44 front from an '80 Waggy, but he won't tell me what the specs are.

So, if anyone would be willing to inform me about what what axles and gears and wms come stock on waggys, that would be great.

Thanks
Justin

should be about 59" wms to wms, stock gears vary from 2.73-3.54 but you'll probably be changing those anyway. If you need a dana 44 front, you probably need lower gears too. There are perches on the underside of the axle for leaf springs. Disc brakes. 6x5.5 wheel pattern. Both locking and full-time hubs were available.

if the axle is off a J-truck or Wide Track cherokee the axles will be the same basic axle but wider. ~62-67" wms to wms.

these should give you an idea. others will know exact measurements. or you could... search :D

It is a dana 44. Make sure it does not have the axle disconnect on the long side of the axle. It probably does not have hubs and has a different bolt pattern (6 on 5.5 vs 5 on 4.5 stock) Another issue is the brakes. Your zj more than likely has abs. If you still want to do that get the front and rear axle and then look up rubicon express, they sell the brackets you will need to weld onto the waggy axles. This is not an easy swap to do. You will be gaining a stronger housing and that is about it. The stock d30 you have has 297 u joints in it wich are the same as the ones in a Dana 44. There are a few guys on Pirate4x4.com that have swapped axles on xj's and zj's. Best of luck and post some pics if you decide to go through with it. (just noticed you are in CO, give the guys at Tomken machine a call and tell them what you want to do)

I think the rear axle is an AMC20. It is different from the CJ version in that it does not have two piece axles like the CJ.

so, do you guys think that this would be a good swap or not? what spline is the d44?

K, here's my plan: 7-8" lift with 35" tires and long arms. A 44 up front would be a good idea right? I'm also trying to find an 8.8 for the rear, but haven't had much luck with that yet.

bigfodee- let me know how it all goes.

thanks
justin

Yes it would be a good swap, if the price is right. Check out pirate and give the guys at tomken or rubicon express a call.

the 8.8 rear will use a ford 5 lug. You can convert the front axle to a 5 lug by using ford parts from a bronco or the like that came with a front D44.

I think the D44 will be a good axle for what you are planning. the XJ weighs a lot less then our rigs, so it should hold up better then it would under a stock wag or full size cherokee.

Actually all of the newer ford 8.8's are 5 on 4.5(same as current jeeps). The best axle is the late model exploder with a v8, it has 31 splines and disc brakes. It is an inch or two narrower, but you can use spacers to correct that.
