I currently have the Haynes "Wagoneer and Pickup 1972 thru 1991" Manual (#50029)which claims to cover my 1978 Chief S but contains alot of 'other' stuff as well. Does anyone know of any other manuals that are specific to just the Chief or for a smaller time (and thus model)spread? Please include any ideas on where to get the other manuals as the parts store guy just shrugged.

You can get a TSM. They are much more specific. Somebody out there sells theses but I can't remember who.

Oopps! Guess I should have told you a TSM is the Technical Service Manual(dealers service manual) and they are year specific.

I own the 1978 Technical Service Manual (TSM). It contains tons of information on the CJ and cherokee and wagoneer and truck.

The Haynes I also have and is quite worthless. Although the Haynes pictures of the rear brakes were somewhat helpful. I would highly suggest the TSM for all repairs.

Zack Heisey <zmjeeps@twcny.rr.com> will have a good quality repop of the original TSM and maybe even an original. Ebay is also a source for originals and Turners 4WD I think at www.thejeep.com (http://www.thejeep.com) or Leon Rosser www.thinkjeep.com (http://www.thinkjeep.com) also deals in TSM's

I got mine from the previous owner. It was all just stored in on big pile of paper. I sorted it all out with 4 binders and many dividers and I am really glad that I have it.

Ebay is a great source. I got my 78 3-volume set for $42. They are priceless!

Been searching on eBay all night...still no TSM.

Any hints on a specific category or search string to try ...or (to make me sound really lazy) an actual auction number someone has found.

You can find some good deals on eBay, but plan on looking/bidding for awhile. Average price seems to go from ~$40 to ~$70. Like most of eBay, bidding gets hotter the closer you get to the end of the auction.

I bought my 82/83 TSM from Zack Heisey (see above). I paid a fair price and didn't have to wait for a 82/83 TSM to pop up on eBay. I also bought a Jeep Parts Manual while I was at it. IMHO the JPM is just as valuable as the TSM. It shows exploded diagrams and part numbers for all Jeep vehicles. They also cover multiple years in two volumes (pre-80 and 80-up).

Hope this helps ...

Frank

I got mine by going to an auto parts swap meet. Beware though, you will find something else you "need".
