I was just thinking, which in itself is dangerous... ;)
I have seen a bunch of new members join the board the last couple years. Most have a new FSJ acquisition or in process of getting one and wanting to fix it up and make it capable for some off road duty. A lot of folks that have been around here for a while are also getting and maintain multiple FSJs over that time. Are we just brain damaged or what? :D 8-14 mpg and we are bring home another 401 tomorrow.
This is a sickness for sure. :p We are saving egg sales money just so we can afford to have at least 2 of them at Ouray in July.

I just work on mine with free/used/cheap parts when I can, and stare at them when I don't have those free/used/cheap parts. :o

Flint, it is a sickness for sure, but one that I welcome.:D What fun would life be, if we didn't have our 401/360/258/tranny puking/t-case imploded/driveshaft busted/rusted floorpan rigs that have the aerodynamics of the Pillsbury dough boy.

FSJs are like drugs but on the plus side:
1. They're not illegal.
2. After getting your high from enjoying them they are still there for more.
3. They don't go up in smoke....uh... not all of them that is.
4. You get friendly waves from other people doing the same thing.
5. Kids look at you in admiration.
6. The wife & kids can enjoy your habit as well.
7. Cops come up to you to praise the good work on your FSJ.

TI have had mine roughly 2 months now. I have had several people ask me this same thing. "WHY ARE YOU SO INTO THESE THINGS ALL THE SUDDEN". 2 whole months and I am leaving to pick up my 4th one tonight. This one will be number 2 in keeping.

It is a sickness. I've had mine for 3 months or so now, it's been a lot of problems and work, and I can't quit. I even look at other ones all the time. I will have a J truck at some point.

OMG, ANOTHER ONE?????
I better keep the 360 in mine or I might feel a "strange compulsion" to sell it to you :D
Yah, it's a sickness but they are fun to drive and what the heck else am I going to do with my time and money? Ok, yeah, I have loads of hobbies... but half of them are much better with an FSJ (camping, wheeling, fishing, hunting, geocaching, etc.)
I have budgeted down my FSJ expenses to where it isn't too bad. That plus sellilng stuff on craigslist and ebay to pad the hobby fund and life is good.

Who is has more damage, the person that buys a 30K new SUV that gets 18mpg or someone that sticks 5k (odd guess for purcase and needed fixin's) in something that gets 12mpg
hmmm
25k /$4 gas (it's coming) = 6,250 gallons x12mpg = 75,000 miles!!!
(remember that is the SUV not even moving)
plus the insurance savings...
and how can you put a value on cool

some retarded brain damage history...
I came to CO in 2000 and fell in love with Krista and the awesome San Juan Mtns. We borrow her Dad's 76 Wag/401 for the Ouray recon on Labor Day weekend. The next month I bought Krista her 59K mile 77 Wag/401 for $100 - in Ouray. In 2001 I drove here from FL with a Uhaul behind my 88 GW/360. Before that year was done, I bought her Dad's 76 Cherokee/401 for $600. The next year a free 81 Wag/360 shows up in the back yard. We strip it. The next Spring, a free 67 Wag/327 shows up in the back yard. We strip it. Then in the Fall we get a 69 Wag/350 and get paid $225 to haul it off. Same time we get a 74 Cherokee/401 (no engine) get $225 to haul it off. That one never came home. We stripped and scrapped it. The next year her Dad gives her his 76 Wag/401 and we also stick the Cherokee 401 in my GW. The next year my Dad gives me his 88 GW/360. The next Spring I drive a 75 Wag/401 home for $500. We strip it and sell the engine to Ryan. That Fall, I enter a contract to buy the Camper Special. The next Spring we buy a 77 J20/401 for $1500 that we have been stalking for 6 years. That Fall, the Camper Special comes home from NC. We finish stripping 3 FSJs and haul the scrap. Now down to 6. 4 with 401s and 2 with 360s. Last month I send deposit for 76 Cherokee/401. Tomorrow, I go get it. This is the Reader Digest version where you get just the facts.
Fact is, we have Dain Bramage. :fsj:

My friend only gets 10-13 in his brand new gmc 2500:eek:
so, if you want a capable truck (and no they aint just look pretty trucks), you can either get a really nice, $48,000 truck and get a looked at like your a rich prick. Or get an old jeep like ours that get the, that things cool look:cool: . spend less money on a truck, get the same, if not better fuel mileage.

What he said!!
...everyday I look at mine and say what the Hell am I doing
Yes, I know the feeling, but I also quit trying to second guess myself, just was not paying off emotionally.
I did however go bicycle shopping yesterday afternoon so I guess I'm not completly bonkers yet, didn'y purchase yet, the technology sure has changed everything I remember.

If I could find a better rig to suit my needs, I would. I'm thoroughly sick of wrenching on my 88 wag. They're are dinosaurs. But I really havent seen anything as capable. I guess I'll just keep the wag.

GAS IS CHEAP!!! DRIVE IT LIKE YA STOLE IT!!!
$3.78 aint bad, hell, they were predicting over $4 LAST summer, what happened to that?! I just tell people, quit yer b*tchin, it could be worse...
My dad always says,
"I dont care if gas gets to $6+ a gallon...as long as its still flowing out of the pump. I went through the gas crisis and waiting for hours in line at the gas station just to get there and find out that they dont have any sucks!"

It's not brain damage.... it's an accessory. :D
Most women waste money on make-up, jewelry and shoes. Meh. My 401 FSJs are MY accessories. I don't do make-up or fancy jewels and shoes (well, I do invest in Birkenstocks - but I wear them when I wrench, so it's a draw ;)). My jeeps are what I use to accentuate my beauty.
There is nothing more stunningly beautiful than a woman wrenching on and wheeling classic steel. Period.
I am the Imelda Marcos of 401s. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful....
Hate me because my 77 401 Wag gets 14.5 mpg.

....The next month I bought Krista her 59K mile 77 Wag/401 for $100 - in Ouray.
Flint forgot to mention that the $100, rust free, 401 wag was my wedding present. And it was 58k original miles, not 59. Diamonds don't hold a candle to that kind of gift! :D Shucks, if he had given me the Hope Diamond I would have put it on ebay and used the funds to buy jeep parts!

When someone finds the hidden treasure of one sickaxx 4wd vehicle that you can buy for under $1000, spend a couple days with a wrench and drive it...then I'll look. Until then, FSJ's are those hidden treasures.

:D S'ok, I'm glad these 401 rigs are going to a good home... I wouldn't know what to do with another one. :) Meanwhile I was able to drive mine to the hardware store (and back) 3 times today... and didn't get stranded... tomorrow... fishing... so... life is good even with a 360 ;)

Going over 10500 feet with a WT Cherk on a trailer behind a 401 GW was not bad if you don't mind going 25 mph. We rolled in about 6:20 with the Cherk. It was a good run and nothing got broke. The seller was happy to see the balance in cash. I drove it up on the trailer and we pulled his carb and battery. The engine sounds tight and hardly shows any grime at all. TC cover was also new with the rebuild 10K miles ago. It is so rusted, there is not salvageable sheet metal. That's OK. We are just after the motor. The QT was popping pulling up on the trailer in low range so that is wore out, Tranny felt good. I am happy.
Ryan can post some pix. I drove and he shot pix. The snow up on Red Mountain, Molas, Lizard Head passes was still pretty deep too. Could not see much rock up Ophir at all. Might be June before we go there.

The J20 is still on light duty so i figured Wally would have to do. Ran good on the passes. The smaller intake chokes it down on the long pulls like Dallas Divide. I had hoped Phil would get this Cherk for a fresh engine in his. I couldn't sit on it much longer. This will get the Camper Special running so we can tag it.

"My Brain Hurts!!!" Brain damage, could be an answer, that or the fact that I actually need the 4x4 so it makes sense to keep. Considering I can do most of the work on it myself, and that parts are generally cheap and available, it saves money that would ordinarily be spent on repairs of a newer car. Now having more than one FSJ must be a sickness, even if you have a dd for better mpg. Once I have the Mustang running as my DD again, the GW and Chero get switched to collecter's insurance, 6000k miles a year ought to be enough FSJ driving for now, I hope. I saw a nice mid 70's Wag nearby, going to go back and tag it with an IFSJA flyer, along with the GW I saw even closer. Still have to look into the GE Chero I found as well, and a couple other Cheros. Idk what I'd do if I got half those FSJ's, guess just line them up in the driveway.

I joined the forum back in 2001 w/ the purchase of a 76 wag. It sat in my yard for a year and a half till I moved then I had to get rid of it after having done nothing to it but take it apart with the intent of restoring it. I re-joined the forum last year with buying an '81 J-10 and I spend about 3 hours of each day doing something FSJ related. One day my wife asked me why I had such a fascination for these rigs and why not get a regular jeep like everyone else and in my best waterboy/Bobby Bouche impersonation, I responded, "I like FSJ's, and I like brain damage cause it make me feel good!"

Michael - the Camper Special has a very tired smoking & belching 360 that this 401 will replace. Shame on you for that Charger comment. :p
Janie, really - it is body by swiss cheese - the RF fender flare is pretty solid but wrinkled beyond repair. Even the grill is a 30 footer. :( Good enough for a wheeler. :D
The Cherokee spent most of it's life in Silt CO. They must have used road salt there from the looks of the sheet metal. Or... the original owner ordered it with the more advanced rusting feature.
