Truck weight

Just wondering if anyone knows what the base weight is of an 80 j-10 360 4spd 4wd long bed? I am trying to figure out how much weight i can add in teh bed(or haul) and still be leagal. I think the CGVW is 6200? Thanx Craig

From Kraue's 4x4 book, a 1980 longbed J10 had a "shipping weight" of 3776 lbs. GVW was 6200 as you noted. I'm not sure how "dry" a shipping weight is, but gather it can't be a whole lot less than a sales lot "curb" weight. Thus, you're looking probably around 3800-4000 lbs for regular weight. If GVW is 6200, and yet it's only a 1/2 ton, well, you do the math.....you should be actuall be able to haul a ton with it, but that would be awful on the suspension over time. Stick to the 1/2 ton figuring normally and you'll be fine. For towing, well....figure you've got a 4000 lb truck empty....and up to 5000 lbs full(cargo AND passengers count toward GVW as well!). Just some thinking.....that should help ya some!

Why not just go to a truck stop, steel yard, scrap yard, the local dump and weigh it? Then you will know what YOUR Jeep weighs with the stuff you have in it all the time.

The scales tell me I am right around 4550, '78 long bed 360 auto tranny. I did subtract my weight. I ain't telling what the real total is. oh yeah full gas tank. So run out and weigh it.

Alright thanx everyone for the input. I think I might weigh it to check weight. as far as the hauling weight, will an amc 20 axle be able to handle a ton. the springs im not worried about. when I do the lift I am gonna put j-20 springs under it (if the axle will hold it) Thanx craig

My 76 J20 weighs 5K wet, 5225 w/ me in it. I have on several occasions put up to 2800lbs of rock in it and driven just dandy although I wouldn' want to go very far that way.
