View Full Version : Whine, whine.

I have a lot of whine in my drivetrain . I notice it at all speeds, but mostly when I'm on the highway. If I momentarily let off the gas it quiets down cosiderably and immediately, but not completely. I've checked fluids in both dif's, TC, and tranny and all seem full. Is this normal for Jeep? Any ideas?

Thanks,

sounds like a pinion bearing in the rear end

I get the same thing. The gear seems to have some wear, but doesn't look too bad (definition of too bad?). I hope it's just a bearing... WOuld a bearing only make noise under load?
Thanks

Mine seems to whine from the front diff like above. How hard of a job is the repair? And how should I check to be sure? Thanks,

Daniel

I was paying more attention to it yesterday on my way home from work. Seems like if I'm cruising along at a steady speed on the highway it's fairly loud, if I let off the gas or accelerate, it quiets down a bit. Would this be consistent with pinion bearing? Seems like it is coming from the middle or rear of the truck.

And Bigyellow's question of how hard the repair is, and how to make sure it's really the problem are both good ones! I'd like to know too, before jumping in to this.

Thanks!!

a pinion bearing will howl under a load when you let off the gas it will get quite you have to remove the ring and pinion to change the pinion bearing and should replace the carrier bearings at the same time

Would the vibration be transmitted to through the rear driveshaft, so that you could actually feel it on the shifter (it's 4 speed)? Thanks.
