I have an 82 Cherokee with a 360, 68K original miles. Yesterday it started knocking. Here's the strange part, it only does it after the motor is at operating temperature and over 2000 to 2500rpms. Just putting around town, it doesn't seem to knock, if I add just enough throttle to accelerate, the knock fades or goes away. Also if I let off the gas & coast it seems to go away. The motor never gets hot or looses/fluctuates oil pressure.

I think I have either got a broken valve spring or a partially collapsed lifter.

Looking for advice. Can you remove the lifters without pulling the heads, like an SBC? If you can do this, I think I could replace all the valve springs and lifters in a few hours.

Thanks

It is most definitely not a spark knock - it is metallic. I highly suspect something in the valve train. It even runs a little rough when it is knocking - furthering my belief that is a lifter or spring

Pull the valve covers off and check for bent push rods or loose/broken rockers.
