my wife was driving her 96 grand cherokee and oil started pretty much pouring from the rear seal. does any one know if i have to take the whole bottom end apart? it has a v-8 (318)

I'd check the oil sending unit before droping anything else. The OSU sits near the dist on the 318 and if its bad and leaking the oil will run down the backside of the motor. If the OSU isnt bad then you'll have to drain the oil, drop the oil pan(you may have to raise the motor to do this) then remove the rear main crank bearing cap. Bottom half of seal is in the cap, the top half is in the block, around the crank. Its not a big job, but messy. You can read in the Haynes manual and it tells how to do it. Good Luck

the 96 318/360 is a one piece rear seal you will have to remove the engine or trans un bolt the flywheel pry the oil seal out tap the new one in and reinstall eng/trans
