Hey folks,

Well the saga continues smile.gif

Went out and forked over the $ for a new timing light (have a feeling my old one has dissapeared by now (left in a friends garage about 1000miles away))

So my timing mark was right around the oil pump... Brought it around to about 13-14deg. Runs a lot smoother, but it now smells like its running SUPER rich!

So should I be looking at leaning out the mixture now that the timings about where it should be? Or is it probably just the result of some minor flooding (lets just say it took a while for my brain to understand which way to rotate the distributor/cap, to get the desired result)

Set the timing first. All that is required is to get the engine running at roughly 600 rpm with the vacuum hose to the distributor disconnected and blocked off, and then set the ignition timing to about 12 BTDC.

Then go about the task of adjusting the idle mixture.

Mistiming the ignition can have cause symptoms similar to running too rich; in fact, unburnt fuel is the result of inadequate combustion.

carburation (fuel injectoration??? smile.gif ) is always set last. get the timing set first, and anything else that might be a problem, like vacuum leaks, etc. then mess with the mixture.

According to my manual the initial timing should be at 5 deg BTDC. Which is were mine is set. You guys are say 12 deg. Do I have it wrong? I also agree, set timing, dwell, plugs, etc. then adjust carb.

Truck wont run at 5 deg (it was in the 20 range, but that was at a much higher altitude; I think we're around 3k feet still) 12 degrees is where it seems to run best.

No dwell to set (electronic ignition).

Question really arises due to the fact that now that the timings closer to where it should be, the trucks running REALLY rich... Last night I was thinking I it was left-over gas in cylinder (due to multiple re-adjustments of the timing, most wrong) But its pretty apparent today, that I need to lean out the mixture quite a bit.
