radiator hose

I replaced my bulging radiator hoses today. I don't really have any overheating issue, just some preventive maintenance. My question is probably stupid, but I'm here for your enjoyment. When the engine is heated up should'nt I be able to feel water moving in the top hose? I can squeeze it and it doesn't feel like there's anything happening there. My thermostat is only a few months old and the beast runs consistently in the 2/3 across the gauge. About the only thing I have'nt replaced is the radiator cap. Any takers? TIA

Having worked in a gas station on the edge of Death Valley for several years,I have routinely checked coolant levels in warmed up cars by squeezing the upper hose.This is usually done with the engine off,but I don't remember ever feeling "moving" water,even if it was running.

But should I be able to squeeze it? Shouldn't something that is filled with fluid be at least somewhat stiff? Insert tasteless joke here. :D

2/3 sounds high to me, is the hose hot? I have had brand new thermostats fail so age means little. OT, You still want the cores? I gotta get them gone soon, come out on the 8th and we'll have a couple more strong backs for loading ;)

The hose isn't really all that hot. The 8th might work for me John. Thanks for your patience.

That hose should be hot enough that you don't want to keep your hand on it for more than a few seconds. If not I'd replace the stat. An additional thing I have seen done is to drill a 1/8" hole in the stat if you have high temp issues. We will have some good company, good food, and good hooch on the 8th, hope to see you there!

Never been able to actually feel the water moving in the top hose. Only by temp change can you tell. Then like John said if your stat is open it should be painfull. smile.gif

Oh yeah, next month is time to swap to a 165* stat anyhow, so I'd swap it anyhow and be sure.
