I just changed the oil and according to the 1986 manual that I have for my 1988 GW it says that it should take 4 qts of oil, 5 qts if I change the filter. But mine took almost 6 qts. Is the 1986 capacity different than the 1988 capacity? Also, what happens if you overfill it? Thanks!

Yep, I checked it about 5 times to make sure I was reading it right. With 5 quarts of oil and a new filter it read just above the "add" mark on the dipstick. this was after I ran it for about 5 minutes and then let it sit for about 10 minutes.

My 80 360 motor holds 6 quarts too, I wonder if some of these motors got 401 pans as there used to be a difference in the pan depth.

You may have the wrong stick in there or tube or both. Find someone with a rig like yours that reads good and compair the tube and stick lengths.

One qt. more won't hirt it any. It's when the coolant finds it's way into the oil pan and really over fills it. That's when you start to worry. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif

thanks irbob I will try that. The motor was rebuilt/replaced by the Jeep dealer here about a year before I got it so I would Assume (I know, thats my first mistake) that they used oem jeep parts.

When I ordered my dipstick tube from the local Jeep/Dodge dealer they gave me a tube and stick for a Dodge 360. Had to cut the stick to make it work and I'm just to darn lazy to put the correct one in.

Talking about dipsticks...figure this one out. I have a '70 Wag with the Buick 350. After changing the filter, full is 4.5 qts. It even says 4 qts on the dipstick. Took some trial and error to find the right filter too. Must be something about Jeeps, trial and error. Just my $.02
