Hello from Calgary. Long time reader, first time poster.83 Wag, DANA 44F, Selec-trac, with front end whining/whirring sound in 2WD. Louder with increasing speed.Sound like tire noise(replaced them sound persists).T.S.M. description of axle bearing noise seems to fit.Sound originated after
front end service.Work order describes-R&R front
diff side seal, drivers side spindle bearing and both axle U joint,Remove drive shaft to R&R fuel tank. Also told a bearing was missing, and was replaced(?). Possibly stub shaft bearing(whatever
that is?)The mechanic has no explanation for the noise.Last week I had the diff rebuilt(complete
disassembly), different shop. Sound persists.
My gut tells me something went wrong during the
initial service,....but what? What do you think?
Was something overlooked OR should I be looking
in other areas? Sorry to be so long winded, but this problems is driving me nuts and is tarnishing
a super mint, 40K mile jeep(Betty).Comments?

First off, welcome to the forum...it's cool :D

I'd suggest listening to the truck as it runs on a lift, hopefully it will make the noise in an unloaded state (mine won't  ). Bring a length of rubber hose use as a stethoscope...

Otherwise I'd suggest inspecting possible components yourself, as "seeing is beleiving"...good luck

Hi Littlechief, thanks for the welcome. Good to see Calgary represented! I think there is about 5 or 6 of us so far. Calgary is a JEEP town, so why do I have some much trouble getting servive? It's like no one has seen our JEEP's in 11 years :D

Welcome Freezer,
It's good to see more people from this area on the board. I don't ask anyone to service my Jeeps as they get that far away look in their eyes when you talk to them. You are in the best place you will find for help. I am curious if the noise persists in 4 hi or low.

Hi J20FAN, and Langdon, thanks for the welcome!Langdon, you're right, I need to figure it out myself, but this is proving to be a challenge.J20Fan, the sound is not noticable in 4 hi/low.The front end is currently enjoying its third rebuild  , and I went by yesterday to look at the parts. The end of the axle,(where it meets the stub shaft is worn/not a smooth surface), and the stub shaft fits loosely in the stub shaft bearing. The plot thickens!I noticed from the picture of your Wag that you are missing a drivers side rear hub cap...I can help. I laughed when I read your comment'far away look in their eyes'....nooo kiddinggg...Yes Virginia a Wag is from a planet far, far away :D

I agree with rigger they have found every thing I have asked them for and know their business. Freezer I actually need three caps as that one went missing too.

rigger/J20FAN, thanks for the shop advice(now you tell me tongue.gif )rigger, your question about what shops I have been to is best answered in person, most of them have given me a rough ride. J20FAN, One cap I could help, three, sorry.I lost one cap after the dealer forgot to tighten it. Shot off while driving down macleod trail, took about six months to replace it.As you know, the red, white and blue 32 groove caps are getting hard to find in good condition. They are available at J.W.JEEP, or you can scrounge, like I did. Now I use lock tight!
