ok here's the deal......on my way to cotton mouth kentucky today for a hare scramble race pulling a 5x13 trailer with my race quad, blah, blah.....anyhow I was heading down the interstate at about 70 (had been traveling for about 2hrs) when suddenly it was like the transmission was in netural but it was still in drive, I coasted to a stop, put it in park (funny noises insued), shifted back to drive and nothing....so I sat there on the side of the interstate made some phone calls and waited.....well just for fun after about 45min I started the jeep up put it in drive and it worked....to make a long story short this happened about 3 more times on the way home.....when it happened I would pull over wait 30-60 min and then I was able to resume until it quit again.......what's wrong is it getting hot and then after it cools it works again.....one last thing when this happens none of the gears work.......and yes my wife told me to drive the suburban but I told her the jeep could do it easily, women what do they know.......

Strange, but I think I would be blaming the T-Case if it is the NP229. Could be in the Trany but if the fluid was up and not burnt smelling I would think its fine.

Probably a clogged filter in the tranny. When yoju stop, the fluid has time to drain back into the pan. When you drive again, the filter slows down the fluid and eventually, the pan goes empty and the tranny stops working.

First thing I would check: the filter in the tranny pan.

Generally a clogged filter will not get you that far,but that's what it sounds like, try a filter service. If the pan has a lot of trash or a brown varnish (got really hot),you're only putting off the inevevitable.Good Luck

so....I guess first thing tommorow I'll have the pan dropped.....never done this before..... should I expect a big mess or should I just take to a shop?

If you have any mechanical skills, you should be able to handle a pan removal and filter change. Yes, you should expect a mess. There is no drain plug on the tranny pan. When it comes loose from the tranny, the fluid is going to come out. Other than that, its pretty straightforward.

Try dropping only a corner of the tranny pan to get most of the fluid out before you drop the whole thing. It's better to only get a pint in your eye instead of the whole five quarts.

Pay attention to the gasket and get the highest quality that you can manage.

Transmission fluid leaking out and getting blown on to the catalytic converter can flash over and a fire can ensue.

This may occur when, say towing a boat at night, and another car will frantically pull next to you pointing at your undercarraige and honking, and then speed away.

A futher occurance might be that while you are looking down at the vehicle beside you that is honking and the passengers are frantically waving and pointing, you (may) notice that there are flames being reflected in the vehicles door panels.

A thought begins to worm it's way into the collective as you slam on the brakes and pull over to the shoulder, while simultaneously jerking off your T-shirt and diving under the vehicle while the passenger gets the fire extingusher out.

By this time you have put the flames out that cover the transmission and catalytic converter, but now the dry grass is aflame, and as you pull the vehicle forward, your co-pilot puts out the grass fire.

Ask me how I know....won't be using cork much anymore. This gasket had been on for about a year when this happened.

I changed the transmission filter but it did not help......it's at the transmission shop now.....oh the pain
