View Full Version : Is There Any Interest In a 232/T-18?

I am somewhat towards the middle of my build and am pretty much set on an engine/ transmission swap. What I have is a stock/ original 232 with what I believe is the T-18 transmission. The engine has a little over 45,000 actual miles and when you look in through the value cover it looks very, very clean. The transmission is four speed with granny gears.

The engine was running about a month ago before I disconnected all the wiring et cetera. It runs very well, especially after it is warmed up. The PO is a mechanic.

I am interested in selling the engine and transmission to help with the purchase of another engine. (I was hoping to get a relatively modern 350/ TH400).

I am curious as to what interest there is to buy this engine/ transmission. I would be will to separate the two and sell individually but would prefer to get rid of both at the same time.

Anybody interested?

Like i said, I wasn't sure but after reading a little i think my tranny is a
T-98A. I have always known I was an idiot but diving into this Jeep Thing has shown me a whole new spectrum to my lack of brian power. :hide:

Anybody interested in this stuff?

Somebody with a 230 J-truck might want it. Unfortunately the early 232 bell housing pattern is different from the late AMC I6s and V8s, so there's no easy adapting the transmission to later engines.

I'd guess it's a T-98 too, but I haven't looked it up in the database. If you were closer, I'd certainly take the T-98. The T-18 and T-98 are very similar internally, and you may be able to use the adapter and main shaft with a Ford T-18 to make a short-input Jeep-style T-18.

I've got a factory T18 in my 68 with a 232. You should be able to see the model # cast into the side of case

actually TGREESE i dont think you are correct in regards to the bell housing pattern .it depends on the year.right about 1972 was when amc changed the bell housing pattern.prior to that there was a six cylinder pattern and an 8 cylinder pattern.after that they all went to the 8 cylinder pattern.so depending on the year of manufacture that 232 ,if it is a 232.could have the later type of bolt pattern.but as we all know amc was prone to commit all types of acts of mechanical incest,so you would need to physically check it to be 100% sure.

Yes, I said early 232. After mid-year 1970, the early 232 was discontinued and then only the 258 was available in FSJs, and a 258 always has the same pattern as the 304/360/401 V8 AMC engines (I call it the unified bell pattern). The unified pattern 232 was available in the CJ and Commando after 1970 but has a different bell pattern, different deck height, different rods and different pistons (I presume) from the earlier 232. Yes, all sorts of "unusual" drivetrain combinations show up, but I think it's very, very unlikely that a unified pattern 232 would have been delivered in a J-truck or wagon, at least in the USA.

I wasnt too sure about 232 applications in jeeps.thank you for clarification on that . i know that AMC used the 232 up to at least 1977.(i had one of those).
