alright, which kind of fairlead do you run for your winches and why??
I run a roller (still on steel cable here) had a factory Warn Hawse, looked like a piece of junk that would just require more force to move in a tension situation.
I'd like to go synthethic someday, but that means other changes and it's a bit out of my price range right now.

Polished aluminum hawse, cuz that is what is recommended for synthetic rope :)
Ran steel hawse for improved front clearance. Probably harder on the rope and limits side pull potential, but I use the winch every other blue moon so I didn't care. :D

I prefer a hawse. No matter the type of cable.
I have had steel cable stuck between the rollers before. The only thing to hook to was a tree at a really steep, right angle. When I pulled the cable slipped between the rollers and jammed between them. I had to take the rollers apart to get the cable out... a real PITA. Plus it damaged my cable about 50' out. I had to replace the cable.

that is what I am afriad of, and I had heard of cable getting stuck before but I didn't know how common it actually was, is there anyway to ensure that I don't jam a cable when winching at awkward(sp) angles??

I run a hawse since I have synthetic rope..
Are far as preventing any problems with a roller, all you can do is not winch at angles that pulls the cable to a corner of the fairlead. Of course, thats a lot eaiser said than done sometimes...

In a perfect world.
I carry an accessory kit from Ramsey, it has all the implements. That time there wasn't enough cable to reach the tree and to a good spot to anchor the snatch block. I was in front of everyone, blocking the trail, sunk to the fairlead. One decent size tree that we could reach. Really the only choice.
With a hawse it wouldn't have happened at all. I would have been out in minutes with no damage to the cable.

I have had the same winch line in my XD9000I since I bought it, 9-years and counting. The only reason I have is because of the roller fairlead. I like the synthetic rope but I don't it would've last this long with what I have put the wrie one through.
