hey guys
1987 GW WITH A WET INTERIOR!!!!!! WHEN IT RAINS MY GW GETS WET ON THE CARPET I MEAN SOAKED. I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS THE DOOR WEATHER STRIPPING OR IF THERE IS A LARGE RUSTED PIECE ON THE BOTTOM I THOUGHT OF PULLING THE SEATS AND TEARING UP THE CARPET.
HOW CAN ALL 4 DOORS LEAK THIS BAD. ON MY 82 AND 86 I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. ON THE 82 THE DOORS WOULD FILL WITH WATER BUT NOT LEAK INTO THE FLOORS I AM AFRAID SHE WILL RUST TO HELL IF I CANNOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM!!! ALSO WILL BE CHANGING THE CARB SOON AND THE ? Get a box of 'LIL SWIMMERS!
Just kidding. Does it get wet just sitting there? And doors have weep holes that are easy to clean out. If it gets wet just sitting then it's coming from a window seal or something. My bet is that it is getting wet when driving in the rain?

Check the well nuts that hold the roof rack in place. My bet it there are a few not attached anylonger, or are just dry rotted. Replace them. You can still get them from the dealer, and someone said there is somewhere else to get them cheaper, but I do not know it.

Check out How to Waterproof Your FSJ (http://www.off-road.com/jeep/fullsize/ifsjawaterproof.htm).
You can always pull the door trim and see if there's lots o' surface rust inside (easier than pulling carpets). Also, what's the condition of your door rubber?
Instad of pulling the carpets, try using the scredriver test. (What's the screwdriver test you ask? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif ) Get up under the truck and start poking around the floorboards from underneath with a screwdriver. Your looking for metal that's been weakened by rust. I prefer a Phillips head myself mmm hmm. <spoken like Sling Blade>
My experience has been that if you see lots of rust under the truck, and the screwdriver pokes through, the problem started under the truck. If the bottom is relatively clean but the S/D pokes through, the problem started on the inside.
The screwdriver test also works to test the integrity of the skidplate too. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
If you remove the door trim, make sure that there is plastic sheeting between the trim and the door. That's a water barrier that often gets removed when people work inside the door.
Hope this helps ...
Frank

Frank hit upon the likely culprit. Check the plastic sheeting inside of the door panels. If it is not intact in the correct place water coming through the doors gets dumped on your floor.
Pull the aluminum strips along the doors on the floor to get some air to the pad under the carpet. That jute (sp?) stuff soaks water for a long time and is hard to dry without getting some air to it.
And hey, THERE IS NO NEED TO YELL! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have a similar problem, though my front drivers side carpet gets wet, even when not driving. I have also noticed that the kick panel on the inside (where the hood release latch is) is also getting soaked. I can't seem to find the culprit- all door seals are okay. I have thought about putting some food coloring in a glass of water to see if I could trace it, but I haven't got around to it yet.

I noticed when I wash GW in the automatic car wash(good test place). I was getting rivers down from under the dash. I am betting the the drain holes below the air vents are plugged and water is coming in thru them. Not sure how you get that cleaned out!

After a good rain with it parked, I can see it drip on the carpet directly below the AC fan, with a drop or two still on the fan. I look up under the dash and cannot find a wet spot to save my life. Mystery leak.
Guess I have to pull the ac assembly to proplerly check it.

well ironhorse i have the same problem and i can tell you its coming fromeither the front of the rain gutter on the roof, orin my case the bottom corner of the winshield as-well.mine is rusted in the typical spots im told for a 88.when it used to rain here in florida if the gw sat outside during a good rain,as soon as i got in started her up and started to roll the water would stream down like a little waterfall..not pretty.good luck to all.mine is 2 weeks away from paint and body shop,so my worries are soon over. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

My pickup rusted out on the driver's side floor, and I had to pull up the floor mats, I had to lay down a fiberglass mat, and fiber glass in the floor I figured it would be easier than welding in a sheet of metal, and it is still there, and since I waterproofed the interior, it can't rust any more, but it still leaks, just pools up in the cab, I guess its time for new weatherstrips, btw does anyone know where to find them for a 73 J-truck?

I cleaned out the vent boxes in my '78 Chero, but had to resort to grinding some access holes to get all the crap out. You'll definitely need to remove the vent cover, control cable etc. and then just start scooping! Some people have been able to vacuum the stuff out by using a GOOD shop vac and going through the cowl vent--I had 22 years of leaves, pine needles and other assorted goop piled up in there so that approach didn't work for me. I'd also look for the drain holes...stick a flashlight in the vent box (lens side down) after you've scooped everything out, and bend out a coat hanger to act as a reamer. Happy poking!
