74 Cherokee fuel gauge not working!!!

The fuel gauge in my 74 is not working.
could it be elec. or mech.? It was working fine now it's not doing nothing, but leaving me stranded. good thing I carry a 5 gallon reserve. Help!!! :D :cool:

If it is anything like the newer models there is a plate held on with 4 rivets under the rug under the back seat, drill out the rivets and replace with sheet metal screws later, under this plate is access to the fuel sender and the wires usually corrode off here, if there is any terminal left you can re-attach somehow and you may be back in buisness.

Just cause it's easier, start with checking for loose wires behind the gauge. Odds are though it's the ground wire at the sending unit as beartrap mentioned...unfortunately pre-80 Wags don't have the access plate in the cab...ya gotta work from underneath :(
