dipstick

I have the dipstick out of my 83 wag for a crack repair to get me to payday and it seems to have an extra bend below the flared face that butts up to the block. It has a 10 deg bend on the same plane as the upper bend. This bend appears to make removal of the manifold necessary. I checked a photo that was in an earlier post but they do not look the same. Can any one tell me if this bend is correct?

So I straightened the bend enough to get the tube in and now I show no oil on the dipstick. I topped it up prior to removing the pieces so I have to assume that the bend is there to direct the dipstick down and back for a proper reading. Does the exhaust manifold typically have to be removed to install the dipstick? I have to pick up a new one Friday and will buy a gasket as well if required.
