Every time I start my wagoneer and drive it I keep hearing a loud squilling noise coming from the engine bay. The only way to get it to quite down is to speed up and put a load on the engine. I have found out that if I take off the neg. terminal off the batt. the noise stops?????? Do I have a short in my electrical system that is putting a load on my altnator or something?????

Tighten or replace your alternator belt(s).

belts look to be in good shape along with the right tension on the belts. Maybe I need a big hammer.....that allways seems to help.

If you have an AM band on the radio, turn it up, if the alternator diodes are kronked, you will hear it on the AM radio as you vary the RPM's.

That is not necessarily true. A bad noise suppressor will do the same, as will plug wires, non-supperssor plugs, and a host of other electrical maladies. You could also have a noisy bearing on the front of your alternator that speaks to you under a load.

Lots of reasons might cause the "loud squilling noise from the engine bay"

However, by removing the negative battery post, he has effectively shut down the regulator circuit and therefore the alternator is no longer outputting, and therefore it seems reasonable to theorize that the alternator might be the cause.

By removing the negative battery cable (Bad, bad, bad...) and taking the Alternator out of the circuit, if the AM radio no longer recieves interference (the alternator pulley is still in the loop) then one might surmise that the Alternator Diodes might be causing the problem.

Not a fact, just a theory to be disproved, and another tool in the box.

thanks for the help....today I pulled the cable off of the batt. and the engine shut its self down. So I have a bad line some where or the alternator is bad....I fix one thing and another breaks smile.gif

I am still adding to this, if anyone sees any errors or wants me to add to the article, just e-mail me.

My thanks to Tom Collins for hosting the above...
