I have a rear main seal leak and was curious if anyone had an idea of how much oil pressure loss this may be causing at running tempeture?

won't cause any pressure loss it just seals the crank to the block, low psi can be - cam bearings, lifters, main bearings, rod bearings, bad timing cover, bad oil psi control spring, or bad oil pump

I just rebuilt my oil pump a few months ago, so i can count that out. the problem i am having is when i get up to running temp my valves start tapping @ acceleration and quiet down when rpms get back up to cruising speed.

My IL6 258 has been running like your motor for the past 40,000 miles.....to me thats normal...

my rear main was/is leaking, oil pressure fluctuates from time to time, my oil pickups, channels and pump are clear and nothing else leaks or burns oil on my engine.....
However, i found my rear main seal leak is being caused by excessive crankshaft walk....i.e. main bearings/thrust bearing are shot and the crank is worn....
......
something to consider maybe? drop your pan and look for grooves worn into the crank from it walking and any play front-rear.....

valves tapping upon acceleration sounds more like preignition to me but then again i can't really hear it

would preignition also account for a stuttering idle?

yea if the base timing is set wrong than idle would be choppy, might be able to kill two birds with one stone by retiming it - good luck and let us know
