I seem to remember a kit on ebay. Do a search for a J10 jeep. Can buy it for about $210.

IIRC, the kit on ebay came on a chevy axle? I would be hesitant to buy something on ebay for FSJ unless it came off a FSJ. I haven't seen a conversion for rear discs that I remember for FSJ; BUT I am not the expert authority on this. It would be nice to see what could be done in this area. I'll let someone educate me as I have thrown down the gauntlet.

.. as I was doing searches here and elswhere there doesnt seem to be a definative answer, (buy this, buy that, DONE!)
I have gotten the bits and pieces of it, buy the kit on Ebay or whatever, find calipers, with/without e-brake, etc...?
I would think this would be a (sligtly) big deal amongst FSJ'ers. I know I WILL be doing rear discs on this and future FSJ's. Its just a matter of nailing down the "right" steps. I would think an outfit like BJ's might be considering a kit like this smile.gif .

Seems there is a guy on Ebay "i should have marked his name down" that makes kits up he consistently has kits available for dana 44's..
But as you all say.. dana 44's aren't exactly the same all the time. I bet that guy would know.
From what I've seen and heard..which may not be accurate..Drums are just fine..if not better than conversion to discs for the Daily Driver and average rigs..disc being better for the guys with monster lifts and tires. I was looking into it and almost everyone told me to save my $$.

Well, the fact is that a hugely disproportionate percentage of your Jeeps stopping power is provided from the front brakes. So the rears aren't as crucial for stopping power. (which is why vehicles come with disc front drum rear)
There is little question that the disc is a better way to go, the question is, is it worth the added cost? I tend to agree with what was told to ffej, that (unless you are running out of things to spend your money on for your FSJ) there are other methods available that will get you more bang for your buck. For example, how about that J20 master cylinder conversion that eceryone was talking about on the forum about a year ago? IIRC, everyone was amazed by the increased stopping power. I would venture to say that a mod like that (combined with a new set of high quality brake pads, lines, fluid, etc. would net a much more significant increase in stopping power than rear discs.

The only thing better about drums is that they make for an easy hookup to your E-brakes, and that they already are on our rigs...can't think of any other reason why they would be better.
I did two front disc brake conversion for a 57 & a 58 chevy PU. All you got with it was the brackets that bolt on, bearing adaptors and instructions that explained what parts to get and how to put it together.
It worked great on both trucks. I will contact the guy on ebay and get back with what I find.

Let me jump in here. First i have the rear disc brakes and I LOVE EM!! I can tell a big difference in my stopping and my line lock works great with the rear disc. Once engaged, it does not move. As for the kit on Ebay, it is quite expensive! I will work on our rigs but with a little imagination and fabrication you set your own up. Here is a pm from Damage, INC.:
Caliper brackets from Speedway (requires welding)
Calipers from a FSJ
Rotors from 95-ish Chevy Tahoe.
Good Luck!
The set up on ebay is for the 6 lug dana 44. The basic kit includes brackets and New rotors for $215. You buy calapers, hoses, ect.
The complete set up runs $499.
I have not used this Kit but It looks like kits I have used before.
Big Red, I would like to hear how you did your custom discs you talked about.

Brent and I have discussed this, but we haven't made a final decision yet. There is alot to consider:
1. quality
2. guaranteed fitment of parts
3. ease of assembly by the end user
4. over cost to us / cost to customers
5. overall quantity of kits that we can see
6. R&D time
7. Shipping costs
As you all know, we are committed to the FSJ's & the FSJ community, so this IS something we are considering. But, it may take some time to get all of our questions answered and make a decision. For the immediate future, I would second the recommendation for the Dual-Diaphragm brake booster. This will GREATLY increase the stopping power of rigs currently using the single-diaphrapm booster.

If I'm not mistaken Chris owns an 88 wag and that would be an AMC20 unless it has been swaped out. I too am intrested in rear disc that fit an AMC20. The kit on ebay is for the d44 and NOT the AMC20.
