Upon replacing the fuel pump, there was more oil on it than gas. Upon checking the dip stick, there was a strong gas smell. Im no mechanic but I dont think this is good. What does it all mean and is it salvagable?

WOW! ... Nathan...Slowly bend down to your knees and repeat after me..."Our..." No it's not the day of reconning. Carefully remove neg. batt.cable and remove oil & filter. If you smoke...you may never again!! Check the fuel pump and check the Carb, I had a power valve leaking into the engine in my '81 once....When you drain the oil it doesn't all come out so you've still got a problem. I the old days we put 5 qts. of diesel fuel in, pulled the coil wire and cranked the engine a bit, drain, and do it again with cheap motor oil........First see what the others think about it........... smile.gif ....ds

What it means is that your fuel pump diaphram was torn leting fuel pump into your crankcase, mixing fuel with oil. The fix is easy enough, by replacing the fuel pump the fuel will go whereit's suppose to and the oil will just be oil. What Don is referring to is the fact that your oil thinned by fuel is not good for the engine, and the way to go about straightening that out is to change the oil. Now, some fuel will still be in the oil, so run it a little while, and change it again. Depending on how long the situation has been like that you may or may not have accelerated wear on moving parts. This frequently happens, in fact finding your oil level going up instead of down, coupled with a "gas" smell is symptomatic of a torn fuel pump diaphram. Get thegood oil in there, and if you have good oil pressure and no loud noises you should be okay.

I agree with the fuel pump dumping gas into the oil. This happened to me about 2 years ago. I check the oil often and when I pulled the dipstick I smelled gas. I knew what was wrong as I had this before in about 1977 on an old Dodge I'd owned. I replaced the fuel pump, drained the oil, put 2 gallons of diesel in, and let it idle for about 5 minutes. Drained that out, replaced the filter and put fresh oil in. End of problem.
I now feel the oil when I check it.
