Who is running the stock steering setup with 33 inch or bigger tires? I am still having problems with mine. I only have the 33's but it doesn't want to turn sitting still at idle. Do I need to just bite the bullet and do the rock ram?
Thanks
Steve

Have you checked out the steering plumbing system. Is the system full of fluid, are you loosing pressure anywhere? Is the belt tight? I would check the little stuff before you dump the money for a ram. It seems to me that with 33s you should still have good steering.

Pump has been replaced and the pump has also been replaced. The belts are good and tight and the fluid is full and bled. The box has been changed out for the fourth time.

On both my cherokee and my wagoneer I can turn the steering wheel with 1 finger, and thats on 38's. There must be something you're missing 'cus I have never seen anyone have problems with 33's and steering. Dennis
I can't say for GWags but my previous stock 73 J4000 ran 33's and my present stock 72 J4000 runs 33's and both rigs' steering worked just fine parked or otherwise.
I just noticed in your post that your steering box has been relaced "four times?" :(
With boneyard boxes or new/rebuilt?

Steve, I feel your pain, my cherokee is the same way but the choptop with 36's I can do the 1 finger routine. I too have replaced lines, pump and box, although this last box felt better than the other and is good enuff I can live with it.
You may want to consider a different ratio box, I don't recall off hand what the differences were but they do have em in different flavors.

-Joe yes they were bone yard boxes and one that I rebuilt myself (no fun). Befor I go for another box I'm going hunting for a smaller pulley, if such a thing exists. This should up the pressure at idle. If that doesn't work, I talked to aguy that said that you could put a washer as a spacer behind the spring on the pressure hose on the back of the pump. This will make the spring stiffer and up the pressure.
I'm not done yet. BTW if anybody needs a steering box for a core, I've got 4.

What is your idle set at? sometimes 50-100 rpms can make a world of difference in the ease of turning...
You can always try a pulley swap to pump more fluid to assist at idle....

Idle is set at 500-600 in drive. I think this is proper. I might try to bump it up a little.

Sounds right.. but try to bump it up a bit and see if there is any improvements...
