I wanted to make sure my J20 was covered for theft and collision, so I went online with my insurance company (Geico) to get full coverage. It told me that the request had to be submitted for further processing (wich is unusual). Then, the next day, I received an e-mail that said my truck is too old and does not have enough value to get full coverage on..
Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley... So, if it gets broken into, or stolen, or I wreck it into a tree, I am just screwed?? I may have to find a new insurance company.
Do any of you carry full coverage on your old rigs? If so, what company are you using?

Find a new insurance company. My 86 is insured for good $$$.
I used to do online insurance(geico, progressive), but switched to a local Allstate agent a few years ago. You can't beat the personal service and is helpful when you have questions. Saved us a few $$$ too. Just drop in one of your local places, meet the manager (they're all independantly owned and operated) and sit down with them and go over the situation.

For older rigs, the only two places to go are Haggerty and Grundy (there are year limits for what they consider "newer" rigs. But, if you have more than one FSJ they consider you a "collector" and the year limit is waived. That's where I'll be calling when my rigs are back on the road.

I use Farmers and they gave me full coverage on my 87 Grand Wag. They also offered full coverage on my 81 CJ.

Not trying to hijack, but I just got my insurance bill today for my WAG.
$78 for 6 months, but I only get $500 if I wreck it.
Of course mine is not worth big $$$, so it was an easy choice for me.

i have state farm and they have always offered full coverage on all my vehicles (oldest was a 77). i only have liablilty on the cherk now but once its buildup is finished i'll probably add on comprehensive in case its ever stolen. because its 'custom' there would be an 'agreed value' that the policy would base off of.
seems silly that a vehicles value is too low to add the policy. if anything, they'd make more on that policy then a new car with expensive parts.

I had "stated value" insurance on my hot rodded, custom body '67 TR4A. The company I had it with got swallowed up by SAFECO, but I'm sure there are lots of agencies with a similar product.

gather your receipts, get it appraised and insure it for whatever you want (if its worth 10 grand, insure it for 10 grand).
Mine all cost me $30 a month/ea for liability and high medical and 50k prop damage if I'm at fault.

I'm with State Farm. Full coverage including glass. My other two vehicles (71 Mustang, 73 F100) are also fully covered. The truck is done the regular way, but that will change to a collector soon. The Stang is collector with replacement value... costs about $80 per 6 months

i use state farm. i like them a lot. i am also only 18 (17 when i set up my policy). i went in there to get a quote. they were trying to get me to put full coverage on my 76 but i told them i could not afford to do that. they said ok. 80 bucks a month. i said deal, and i got the first bill and it said that i owed them 72. i said sweat. they hit a wrong button while giving me my quote.
last month it dropped to 60 a month. i finally turned 18 :)

If you are military, why not check out USAA? They might not give you full coverage on the J20 but you'd be suprised at the price for the gynormous Caddy. Food for thought.

Yes AAA. It is not driven to work or school, less than 7500 miles a year, how AAA would check I don't know. Although it is not driven to work (not in school) and I have put less than 2500 miles on it in the 2 1/2 years I have owned it. The problem with Grundy and Hagerty is the vehicle cannot be a daily driver (OK at least with Hagerty). You must have a designated dd and be able to prove you have full coverage on that vehicle.
EDIT: Yes it's still "FULL COVERAGE" even though it's not a dd.

I changed from Allstate to Statefarm when I got my jeeps, the local Allstate rep took 4 days to get back to me with a quote. Statefarm had one to me in 2 hours. For the 3 vehicles liability only runs me 150 a month.

State Farm let me put full coverage on my '63 Wagoneer. I was asked how much I had into it, and what I thought it was worth. They let me place my own value on it, and I am covered for that amount.

I'd like to put a vote in for Nationwide. I currently have my 88 GW insured as a classic for $8,000...I basically just told them how much I wanted it to be insured for - no questions asked. I got quotes for 10k and 15k, but figured that 8k would be plenty for its current condition. Once I get all the leather replaced and a new paint job, I might increase my coverage amount.
I will always use Nationwide. A couple of years ago, a HUGE oak tree fell through the roof of my house. They literally had to get a crane to get the tree off the house. I was out of my house for about 3 months and Nationwide was an incredible company to work with during this trying time. Within an hour of the tree falling, a Nationwide rep showed up and handed my $800 cash so that we could go get something to eat and get checked into a hotel for the night...no kidding. The total claim ended up being upwards of $50k (eating out, apartment lease, incidentals, etc), but I only had to come out of pocket 500 bucks.

I don't have full coverage but one thing I do have on my vehicles is road side assistance from USAA it is worth the extra 7 or 8 dollars every six months. You never know when the Jeep might want to take a break somewhere.

All you folks insuring your vehicles for $8000- $10,000 etc : Be careful about what you think you are getting !! What you are doing is paying a collision and comprehensive coverage premium based on what you think the vehicle is worth. It's the claims folks that will determine the value. If you truly have a vehicle in extraordinary condition...by all means get an independant third party appraisal....in writing !! One reason that collision and comprehensive premiums are so inexpensive on these vehicles is that the insurance value is on the LOW side of the spectrum. Hagerty is a different story...regardless, if you have a total loss or severe collison damage...you've got to have something fairly recent documenting the value of the vehicle. Take it from a 19 year insurance agent...cover your butt !!

I used to have comprehensive on my '76 (which is tagged historic) when I tried to do the same to my '87 ERIE told be the vehicles must be worth at least $2K and need a visual inspection (I paid $500 and $700 for my two). So it's liability only for both. When I really start using the '87 a lot I'll take the time to get it looked at and run liability plus comprehensive.

When I bought my wag I looked at a bunch of places like you. I also heard that it can not be a DD. I ened up with progressive on a stated value policy. I recently switched to Allstate when they came up with a stated value policy that would work for me. Allstate ended up being a lot less.

You know it's funny but I have the 73' insured full coverage, with a higher than normal property damage, (plowing). I asked the rep about the value and she said if the vehicle was totaled for whatever reason, they would first offer me the "book value" then it would be up to me to find a replacement vehicle that shows the "true" replacement cost of my truck.
I had the same thing happen when I was with Farmers. My wife owned a 91 Toyota Ex-Cab 4x4 SR5 Automatic in perfect shape, I know I know :( , and it was totaled as a result of a bad collsion with a newer Ford truck. When Farmers tried to give me a replacement check for $2300.00 I told him, "Ok I'll take that if you can find a truck for that kind of money anywhere within four states!" He called back a week later and offered $5700.00, which was the true "replacement cost" of the truck in the market.
So the advice I would give is, don't think for one second your insurance company will take care of you if that happens, Farmers whom I was with for 12 years, tried to screw me so I moved to Progressive.:D
