View Full Version : Lectric choke busted
I just checked my ignition switched power lead to the electric choke on my Carter AFB, and it is good - which means that it is the choke itself that is the problem. When I turn the ignition part way (to give the choke power) and then open the throttle, the choke is not closing. Anybody have prollems with these B4...any ideas on how/waht to check?
Thanks

The elctric part of the choke opens the choke plate, not close it. The closing is done with mechanical linkage. There should be three small screws that hold the choke cover on. Loosen these and turn either clockwise or counter-clockwise while holding throttle open. This should close choke plate. Thew adjustments are different for all carbs so you will have to play with it to get it reight.

you might have to get a new thermostat(spring) they wear out after a while
So, since it used to work, and now it doesn't, it is prolly broken.
For me to get this straigt in my head, even electric chokes are spring operated. The difference being that...
-Automatic chokes have a thermo-acutated spring that expands and retracts to open and close the choke
-Electric chokes have a spring that always holds the choke closed unless the electric part pushes it open.
Is that about right? All this is making me wish I had a manually operated choke like an older truck.
Thanks again

yep the elec choke is heated by the elec and the other is heated by exhaust and after awhile the spring losses its tension from bieging heated and cooled -heated-cooled-heated-cooled

I thought the electric choke was broken once on an 88GW but it actually was only a bad connection in the plastic receptacle thingy that plugged into the oil sending unit socket. How cold is it getting in Boise? I thought an electric choke really only mattered if it was below 60F, but I could be wrong on that.
It aint cold at all really, but recently starting her up in the mornings is getting to be a real chore...seems like only a month ago or so that she would fire right up in the mornings like a new car. Now, it is a matter of cranking for 30-60 seconds and pumping the throttle like a mother...maybe something else is wrong?
But what?
