View Full Version : Springs?

I was looking at the TSM for 79 Jeeps and found that Wagoneers only had elongated leaf springs, in the front, which consist of two leaves on each side.

Mine have mulit-leaves (7 on each side). Am I to assume that the PO made a modification?

It does sit higher than any stock 80's Wag and doesn't suffer from sag.

They could be replacements...can you see the remnants of any tags/labels on the top of the springs? My '78 Chero had two-leaf fronts, and the new ones from JCW had five leaves. Hopefully, that won't translate into an overly stiff ride--I can't really tell with the old rear leaves still in place. Actually, JCW's "heavy duty" spring packs have seven leaves so there ya go.

My OEM front springs had only 2 leafs as well....somebody may have replaced yours with an aftermarket set or from a donor vehicle.

Todd (RiverBeast),

My Jeep sits like yours did before you did the body lift. Did the 31's rub? If not, I guess it would be easiest for me to do a body lift rather than mess with the suspension.

Actually it's probably six of one, half dozen of the other. With a body lift, you're going to have to fab tranny and xfer linkages, lower your radiator, etc. and you'll still have to fight obstinate bolts that are hidden by gnomes. At least with a suspension lift the things you need to get to are right there in front of (or above) you...

31's will fit on a 6-7" rim, but that's it. a slight bit of modding may need to be done on the inner lip of the rear quarters.

4" lift (susp) can still use the 31's on a 8" rim... add the 3" bodylift and 33's on 10's will work fine (look on my site).

So the cherokee and the wag had different springs on the front? The one in my garage (what's left of it) had a 5 pack on it. And I am pretty sure they are original equipment.

I had 7-leaf spring packs on my '88 GW, which I replaced with 7-leaf spring packs from a '79 Wag. This was their "soft-ride" option: several thin leafs provide more spring damping than fewer thick leafs.

As far as I know the 7 leaf packs were used for the towing rating and the snow plow option that was available in t he 80,s. Got to go w/ more, thinner springs they will articalate a lot better.
