I am contemplating getting rid of my plow truck. IMHO the truck is not worth much, but it does have a very nice 401 in it.

I believe it is a remanned engine. Runs very nice.

I know that it is hard to ask potential buyers what a good running 401 is going for, but realistically 95% of you are out of my area.

What does a complete 401 that can be seen running, with mechanical guages go for?

I know a few years ago that I was getting about $300 out of core 401's that had the heads off and needed some mild machining.

I am still making up my mind here on my course of action.

What will likely happen is that I will sell all of my parts, along with the truck, engine and all together for a reasonable sum.

Good running 401 value?

Thank you so much, ROB

Someone on here just bought one on Ebay for almost $800 in Oklahoma. Put it on Craigslist.

Yeah that is where I sold one. The other was on a car AMC site.

In my area there are quite a few FSJ's around. Judging by what I see on C.list myself.

$800.00 Wow!

If you are willing to pallet and make shipping arrangements, then put it on ebay and expect to get top dollar of $600-$800. I personally wouldnt even consider paying that much for a 401.

If you list it on craigslist you can probably expect $200-$400. I would consider buying one on the lower end of that scale.

OK. That gives me something to go on.

Thanks, ROB

It all depends on who is shopping when you post it up for sale. I have a deposit on a 76 Cherokee WT w/401 that has about 12000 miles on it since a rebuild. This one is complete except radiator and carb, incl title for $400.

Ditto

800 is a sum that a die hard AMC loyalist would pay,or someone who is impulsive. I wouldn't pay any more than 300 for a 401 that I could see run, and run well, that wasn't a verifiable rebuilt engine. I never pay anywhere near top dollar for an engine that was "rebuilt not long ago" but somehow no one thought it was important to keep the reciept or even the name of the person/shop that did the rebuilding.

It's hard to say. I just paid $700.00 for a 401 I won on ebay. I looked for around 2 years before finding one. Oddly enough it was in the same town in which I live. AMCs are very rare around here. I've only seen 2 j trucks in fields, 2 wagons on the road, and save for a Gremlin a few years ago I haven't seen any AMC cars...

I would not have paid that much but I didn't have to pay freight which cost anywhere from 150 to 700 depending on the locations of what I did find in the past.

I guess it all comes down to location, timing, supply and demand. The easier you can make it for potential buyers to get it to their door the more money you are likely to get. I have seen a few engine rebuilders' websites who list a $900 core charge for these things!

Looking back at one of my posts, a member here was looking for one. You may have some luck there. I believe his name is SnowShoe. Good luck!

I finally found an AMC board that is pretty active. I was a member years ago and then changed computers etc. It turns out that a guy that I sold stuff to was still on there.

Anyways, he posted a link to two 401's in my area. Both appear to be non-runners, but one is complete but I don't think it runs.

Anyways, there are two for $800. And one that looks complete for $500 about an hour and a half from me.

I'm just getting ideas. Not quite sure what I need to do yet.

FWIW- those are in the central Oregon area.
