trying to get a remanufactured short block here in town is like the needle is the haystack :( i could drive about 300 miles to get one or have it shipped but but then if it should crap out id have to drive or ship it back. So instead i have decided to rebuild my old one. I bought a cheapy dial caliper from harbor freight to see if it has every been bored the pistons measure 4.08" (stock) but the cylinders vary from 4.09"-4.15". now is the cylinders within specs to allow the use of standard bore rings or should i just pay to have it bored out while it is at the machine shop for cleaning and cam bearings. Id probably only have it bored to the next size up .10. if i am going to rebuild it i should do it right right. by the way it looks as if it has had a crank put in it since the crank it stamped M-.10 R-.10 Probably spun a bearing in the past.

The block bore should be within 4.0799 and 4.0831, and finish honed to achieve a 0.0012 to 0.0020 piston clearance tollerance. I would opt for a differant crank I do not go more than .010.

I gotta tell ya, I've built lots of engines...what do you expect out of this engine once you get it rebult? You gonna drive it the miracle mile or is it just gonna be a part-time toy? I've re-ringed engines that had way more than a fingernail's worth of a ridge in the cylinders and had good luck. I just rebuilt a 360 for my 89 wag, it's been a few months ago so I don't remember how much wear I measured, but I bought a complete overhaul kit from autozone that included everything except the rods and crank. It cost me about $400 if I remember correctly. Only thing I did to the block was clean it, deglaze it and put new cam bearings in it. Complete valve job on the heads. It had over 180k on it. I now have about 3k on it since overhaul and have yet to add any oil to it. It has great power too. :D
