Hi, While breaking-in this '90 GW, about 200 miles so far, I keep an eye on all my gauges. After about 20 minutes of driving I notice that my temp gauge is reading 230, 240 and almost 250 degrees, just below the red area. I even turned the heat on to bring the temp down a bit. Coolant level is fine. Weather is 50 and my driving very moderate. What temp should I be reading, the owners manual is no help.??? Isn't 240 too hot? Advice appreciated, Cheers, Jack

That's too hot. It should read just above the blue.
Is your water-pump turning? Maybe your theromostat is stuck shut?
In any case, this is a popular topic here on this board. A search will reveal a number of possible solutions.
BTW, where in New England are you? Seems like a lot of Northeasterners joining us on the board these days! smile.gif

Thanks for the advice. I called my friend who has a shop and works on my Jeeps. He's got one and loves 'em. I'll bring it down Monday AM. He said the temp should be about 190-195 tops. Also, not to trust the gauge as it could be faulty. Just bring it down for a check. He has a lasar device that reads the true temp, thats a good starting point. I hope I haven't damaged my newly rebuit engine...seems fine, except for that temp reading and takes 20-30 minutes of driving for it to reach that point on a warm (50's) day. I will probably drive it to work today, a 5 minute ride. I'm really glad to find this board, great board. Great info. Btw: I live in Vermont and GW's are the perfect vehicle for me. Thanks for the advice, Cheers, Jack

We're glad to hear that! One thing that gets to almost all of us here is when a new member joins and sells there Jeep the same week due to an abundance of problems. it's good that you got a "Jeep Guy" for a mechanic too. We may have the cumulative knowledge of FSJs unserpassed by anyone, but it doesn't do as much good as one guy who knows what he's doing being able to look at it first hand. We're glad to have ya' here and glad your Jeep is runnin' like it should!

No, all cars have their own inherent problems and I've been driving Wags and GW's since 1980. I just like them and there is a beauty to the simplicity of the design. Works great for where I live in Vermont. Yes, I am lucky to have a Jeep Guy up here who loves and understands GW's and he's had them for the last 15 years, so if I got a prob...he's probably already been there a few times. And he's a great guy too. Having found this board, I am amazed at all the great info and experience and advice of the members who know FSJ's inside and out. Very impressive group here, Cheers, Jack
