The first time they didn't even test it because it had no catalytic converter. I put on one and it tested 250 HC and 8.50 CO. The limits are 155 HC and 1.91 CO. I put on a new smog pump(the old one was locked up and had no belt on it). Now the HC is down to 162 and the CO to 5.40. Anyone got some ideas how I can bring it down to tolerance?

When was the last time you did a tune-up?

What are the rest of your numbers, NOx, CO2, O2 and how does it run? Smoke? Smell rich?

You can run alcohol for lower numbers, but it's better to get it running smooth than to run alcohol every time you have to be inspected, IMO.

Move to brown county, you wont have to go through emissions used to live there and drove some real crap bombs! Removing your exhaust donut may also help (it helped me to pass CT emissions)

I just recently changed the oil and filter. I didn't change the air filter. And it's been a while since I've changed the plugs, cap, or rotor. Since it runs fine I didn't think that would help.

A tune up isn't just cap/rotor/wires. Is all your smog/vacuum junk hooked up correctly? Are the CTO's working, EGR work, carb tuned etc? Definately at least replace the air filter with a fresh one. You could also for a very short period of time(as in just for the test) lean your carb way out and re-adjust it immediately after the test.

Alcohol didn't work for me but my brother used a product that Pep Boys carried here called "Guaranteed to Pass" and his 78 F-250 couldn't pass without it. He went back and bought all they had. LOL

Eventually in a few years it got so bad he had to take it to a shop with a testing machine there. They tuned it down so bad it'd barely pull it's own shadow and it took them a few trips to get it to pass at the emmissions center after it passed their own machine.

When they got it back they reset it to run decent.

You can go to

www.smogsite.com (http://www.smogsite.com)

and

www.recarbco.com/technical/smog/smog-lowcruise.html (http://www.recarbco.com/technical/smog/smog-lowcruise.html)

to read all about what the possible causes could be. As you will see on these sites, knowing all of your test numbers can help diagnose the problem. A fuel additive called "Fuel On" might have helped me, I followed the instructions on the package exactly. Good luck.

Yes the Ohio echeck is a bunch of crap. I had a 1984 chevy 3/4 ton with a 350 out of a 78 truck that I put in my self it didn't have any smog stuff hooked up no cat. it leaked oil burned oil smoked the vac advance didn't work and it had a junk Qjet.[not saying Qjets are junk but that one was in bad shape]. and it passed all 3 time's I took it. Now tell me how it is that they say those test are accurate.

recarbco site is very helpful,
http://www.recarbco.com/technical/smog/smog-lowcruise.html

My other suggestion is, tune is well,
what carb are you running ?
If a 2150 I cant help much , but if it is a Q-jet or a Edelbrock 140xx email me offline and I can help.
lastly, a 1:4 dilution of spirit (alcohol) from your local hardware store will guarantee a pass.
