What is the difference between a 229 and a 208? I use my rig as a daily driver 85% of the time. The rest of the time is spent off road, but nothing too crazy. Any thoughts?

Go 229 Its nice just to flick a switch and it's in 4X4 also you can drive on dry pavement with the 229 the 208 high lock so it's not recommended. also you have to have locking hubs if you have a 208. the 208 has strength advantages over a 229

The viscous in the 229 will explode if you put too much power into it.
229 has a differential (viscous coupler) that allows slip between front and rear when on pavement. The diff cannot be locked in high, it only locks in low.
Locking hubs aren't absolutely necessary with a 208. In 2wd it is the same as driving a 229 in 2wd - everything in the front just spins.
After blowing the viscous apart in my 229, I thought about replacing it with another 229 so that I would have the full-time 4wd setting, but after thinking about it I really wouldn't use it so I went with a 208. If I need 4wd, then I need FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, and not something that allows slip between front and rear.

The NP229 is a full time transfer case that uses a VC to simulate an LSD within the TC. It's a great transfer case for your needs as you described.
The NP208 is a part time transfer case. When engaged in 4HI or 4LO and hubs locked, it is real 4WD.

newwag a 208 is sought after for part time reasons...less wear and tear on frontend parts like mentioned! if you find a 208 and want to swap i have a few sets of lockout hubs! i also have a 208 shifter but no linkage!
plus with part time you can use 2wd low, just dont lock in the hubs:D
