factory drivetrain, t-case, axles. 360, 727, np209 in the 90gw

im pretty sure the 79 is 360 th400, not sure about the t-case,
as far as i know they havent beed changed or upgraded in anyway.

Sounds like the Cherokee is set up for off road already. I personally would go with the G-Wag for what you need it for. More comfortable on the road, rust free is big, and is very capable off road as well. The drivetrains are probably equal as far as durability also. Or, buy 'em both! You know you want to! Good luck!

Well, this is personal preference here, but I've had GW's and WT's. WT's rule, and I wouldn't have a doubt about buying it.

A gwag and W/T cherokee are both very sweet rigs but the Cheif has more invested allready from the way it sounds. Mods allready installed can save alot in the long run if your ultimate goal is offroading, a functional winch is really a bonus, as well as 33's and a 4 barrel. These are $$$$$ items. Interior, grille and bumper are very easily aquired if you scratch around.

What it boils down to is 2 door or 4? I have spent alot of time in both and 4 doors can be a bonus, hence a wag will always have that advantage over a 2 door cherokee.

A stock 90' wag is a very solid platform for cruising down the road for long distances, but there can be alot vaccum lines going on there. The wag offers many creature comforts over the cherokee, power windows, seats and other nice things also...if they work properly.

A W/T Cherokee on 33's is also a very stable platform for going down the road, if the tires and suspension aren't junk. With the Cherokee it comes down to Build Quality. A truck could have all those mods and be junk, or it could be sweet. It could be wheeled on pretty hard and ready to be parted out, or need a major overhaul of everything that's not been replaced. A stock 90' wag with low miles probaby hasn't seen much wheelin' as opposed to rig that allready sports a lift and winch up front.

Great analysis!
What more could a person add to this?

JMHO--its your money and your needs it has to fit
But to me with the needs you listed, the low miles GW wins hands down. The Cherk could/would be a crapshoot. Even if good quailty in the build up its much more likely to have been ridden hard and put away wet. Yeah WTCherks have a higher "cool" factor; but looking "cool" setting in the drive or shop while you're waiting to fix it is not a cool as having a solid DD rig (or at least as solid as our FSJs get)

great wording from everyone!! since i already have 90 gw that is going to be a solid DD (whenever it gets here), i was leaning towards the cherokee. i was going to put the suspension and tires and such on something anyway. The cherokee is located a 4x4 offroad fab shop so im pretty sure that he installed the lift correctly. He apparently used it for a DD for some years before he had family. it also has power seats from a GW, the non power windows is eh but at least its only 2 of them. i was kind of thinking since the interior on teh cherokee isnt "perfect" it would be more ok to put 3 dogs, camping, dirt, etc in it. while the GW is just so pretty i would feel bad. So far the opinions i got are great! maybe some more to help decide.

I would lean towards the lack of cancer :) To be honest you will probably be happy with whichever one you purchase ... it is, after all, a FSJ !

they BOTH are in such good shape as far as cancer. the GW definitly is spotless, but the chief is no slouch. im not to worried about cancer unless its bad.

test drove the GW last night. it rides sooo nice. some small things that need to be addressed but nothing big.
