Anyone ever replace a chain on a 229? Are there any special tricks, tools, etc?
C'mon, someone has to have done it.

I haven't replaced the cain but I have had it apart to pin the viscous coupling.
Get a beak down of the case. My old Chiltons book (the big one) has a good illistration. There are 202 needle bearings that will fall out when you take it apart. They must be held in place with grease to reassemble. Chilton's tells you how many and in which location they go so you can make sure they are all there.

Don't have that book, or a good drawing. Can you tell me where they go, or supply the info? Is it an obvious thing?

Back in 03 when I was sure my 229 was on it's last leg, I started research to rebuild it. All I found then was a parts list with diagram before I changed lanes and got a 208. Not much but it is a start...

Thanks. That's a good start. Now I wonder which of thoise bearings are the ones that fall apart.?

That's the one that Chiltons uses too. #20, #28 and #14 are the needles that will fall out if you lift the side gear (#26), You may be able to replace the chain without jacking with the bearings if you can tilt the front output enough to get the cain off. If you lift off the viscous coupling and the side gear, all those bearings rain down into the case.
