Finally got some time this weekend to work on the cherk...got the rear diff put back together again, put on the new grill, finished cleaning out the sand and detritus from all the places inside the body it's not supposed to be, and took her for a little drive...to see what comes next!

So among other projects I have a shot exhaust system...and now I'm trying to decide what to go back with. She's a stock 360, 101k (holds 45 lbs of oil pressure warm at an idle!!!) with the 2bbl from the factory. I may or may not go with a 4bbl, don't know yet. I'm thinking I want to run duals outside the frame rail and pipe them out just forward of the rear wheels...I've seen pics here before of folks doing this but can't find them now.

Pros, cons?

EDIT - Update - it was Gambler68 that had the pics of the duals outside the frame rail I think...I found the post I was thinking of, it was one I started last November talking about single vs dual exhaust...

If you like a good rumble then go with 4 inch sidepipes. I run them on mine when I first built it but changed it over to exhaust out the rear after my daughter was born.

I like my duals, just inside the frame rails and dumped just before the rear tires.

I prefer a single 3" set-up. Soon I will scrap my true duals in favor of a 3" system...

I have also been trying to figure out how to redo my Cherokee exhaust. For those of you who have done the coversions, are yall buying exhaust setups or just giong to a local place and having them bend pipes? What are yall using for muffler (and if you have one) catalytic converter ?

Crom runs dual 3 inch into a single 3.5 through a dyno max glass pack down the left side with a right side drop!

I had mine done at a local shop... dual 2 1/4 from the manifold back to Flowmaster 40 series and it ends with both coming out behind my passenger side rear tire at an angle with 3" chrome tips. looks and sounds amazing.

i have a single 3" magnaflow cat and magnaflow turbo mufler, then 3" stainless tailpipe with a turn down in the stock location. i am still runnig the stock y pipe. i love this set up. sounds great, it is quieter than the stock mufler was at idle but opens up at mid-high rpm. has a deeeeeeeep rumble. it flows great with a 401 4bbl.

Dale,

I wish you could bring it down here to visit your sis... lol... I got a new Y pipe bent, new 2 1/2 inch pipe, a glasspack, and an exit out the original place for $100... it sounds good... idles with just a little rumble, then opens up just enough too... I am eventually going to go with a one in two out performance muffler and have the pipes go out both sides. It's just so much cheaper to do it this way and, if you get right down to it, duals aren't going to help the performance any...

I'll be down there the weekend of the 29th - but I don't think I'll have the old girl ready for a drive that far quite yet...we'll have to hook up that weekend though if you're around!!

I'm liable to do a 1 in 2 out and run them both out the SAME side - I don't mind that look...

I gathered up the parts and had a local shop in Arlington piece it together...good guys. I held the pieces where I wanted them and they cut/welded them in place. Think they charged $80 for the welding and the 2 glasspack mufflers. The crossover tube gets the proper V8 rumble on both sides...without the crossover it would have sounded like two out-of-tune four bangers. Miscellaneous parts included one "H" pipe kit, 2 mandrel bent "U's" (which were cut into smaller bends as shown in the photo), two long 3.5" kickouts from Speedway catalogue. The kickouts slide right over the glasspacks. Less than $200 in the whole deal. Certainly no significant performance benefit, but that wasn't the point. By the way, the front driveshaft is not installed in the photos, but the exhaust tubing clears it by a mile.

Well I'm still running the 2bbl carb on the old 360, so performance isn't really high on my list right now...so I'm right there with ya! I'm wanting as good a sound as I can get on my budget...

The glasspack sound is sort of old school, I guess. I like it, but it's certainly not like the pair of single chamber Flowmasters I had on my LT1 Bitter. On the other hand, glass packs are almost free and you can hear yourself think inside the truck.

OK so here's another question...is there a benefit in either sound or performance in running duals back to a 2 in 1 out muffler or just running them into the Y pipe and using a 1 in 1 out? I get the sound differential in duals, but I don't exactly understand the 2 in 1 out...I guess better flow through up to the muffler, i.e. you're not constricting the exhaust yet?

TowTruck- Thats awesome ! Im going to look into haveing something like that done. I like the price too!

A lot of good stuff here, so here goes from my end.

Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but I want to use the original 'Y' pipe attached to the exhaust manifolds (money, you know). I've read and heard of many FSJ owners using 2.5" to 3" pipe from there back to the catalytic converter and to the exhaust in order to open up the exhaust a bit for less restriction. Not too much to eliminate the natural scavenging effect from the engine.

Am I correct in assuming that pipe adapters are used to increase the size of the pipe right AFTER the 'Y' pipe and before it goes into the cat? Or is a different setup altogether?? The adapter after the 'Y' pipe seems easier and less complicated. I'll be doing most of the work myself (like everything else).

I'm also considering a DynoMax muffler in conjunction with a high flow cat. Just not sure which cat to use.

Suggestions???

Thanks for any feed back.

I'd appreciate some help on this one.

Dale:

If you can swing a setup like that Towtruck showed, side exhaust might be pretty good. If you elect to foego the crossover pipe, you'll be sacrificing some stock torque all across the rev band for basically cosmetic or logistical reasons. And, as noted, just individual banks routed out the sides without a crossover will sound & perform just as you'd expect from a V8 with a 18436572 firing order -- really goofy.

Single 3" works really well, and volumetrically compliments the stock 2-1/4" manifold outlets. To get optimum benefit, you'd want to have a custom y-pipe made that doesn't neck everything down to 2-1/4" before going to a 3" cat/muffler.

If cosmetics are your thing, a single 3" in / dual 2-1/2" out muffler makes things all manly & symmetricalish.

IMO, WT Cherokees beg to have dual outside frame rail exhaust. :fsj: Point them out just in front of the rear flares.

Towtruck, that is a nice setup you have. http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Drooling/drooling-5.gif

I removed the entire pipe, muffler and exhaust manifolds on my 88 today. Dang wind was harsh and is still ringing in my ears. Next the Hedman headers go on, then a loud drive to town to get some twice pipes on my 401.
