Don't recall anyone here in recent time showing off something like that. I think it would probably look cool but the view out the back is grand and I like all that glass myself. Gotta keep an eye out for zombies ya know. ;)

Uh..not really. If anything, you could say that the Cherokee is a modified Panel Delivery, but they are so different, you really can't relate one to the other.

If your wagon is draggin...
Dude, we need to recruit you to design us a shirt print for Ouray. Serious. A lower rider on Imogene <not>. :D Maybe a low rider in front of the Ouray sign on the north end of town. Waddaya need to spark that creative motor? <hint-hint>
I have to agree with Thomas on the Panel and Cherokee 2 door design. By the time AMC got the Jeep thing going good, the Cherokee was introduced and well received by the public. The Kaiser frame and suspension was dated on the original Panels compared to the 74 and newer FSJs. The side panels are also single layer sheet where the Cherokee has double skinned. I can say it is a PITA to go through it with a sawzall too. The outer skin would always start vibrating like crazy when I cut up the ole 76 last year.
This is not photochopped... :D

Yes. people have seen it done, and a member was starting such a project. I don't recall it ever being completed. But take a look and see.
Do a Search for with "Barn doors" and also try "Panel" in the title.
Make sure you set the search so it turns up older posts.

I think the Jeep gods would smite someone if they actually did that to a Jeep.

Agreed. I don't they'd stop with just kittens. I think whole armies of small, cute, furry things would perish! They'd probably be endangered species, too!

I talked with a skilled bodyshop metal guy about paneling in the rear quarters on my 87 GW as a future project. He said that it would not be a just simple job of popping out the glass and trim and welding in sheetmetal since the glass support is part of the roof support structure. Just a simple sheet metal insert would weaken the roof structure and probably have a problem with "Oil canning". some additional support/bracing would have to be built in. its till in my long term plans but I know now that it'll be more complex ($$$) than I initially thought. I'll probably start with just a black-out film or vinyl for starters and see how I like the look and the way it functions in traffic with the reduced rearward visibility (the factory mirrors are way too **** small)

In a recent Hot Rod magazine there is a photo (from back in the day) of a Wag. or Cher. panel sitting in the pits a drag strip.

that "hot Rod" pic was mentioned here on the site recently. I beleive it was a support vehicle, probably a sedan delivery used by a SoCal jeep dealer who was active in a bunch of off road and other creative stuff with jeeps. I'm thinking the name was Chuhacha or something like that--maybe Brian. one of the others who are more knowledgable may chime in on it.

I thought long time member "Porkchop", had a red Wag with the rear glass replaced with steel to simulate a 4 door panel rig.

Something's out of tune if a v8 Wagoneer is running those numbers. I timed out an 18 second run with my old 360.
That green '73 has run high 11s. The rules limit him to 12 flat because he doesn't have a cage. He's a multiple time track champion with that wagon.

It has been a couple of years but if you can get back issues of JP magazine. One of the editors bought a Jeep Panel wagon and, if I remember right, cut the top off. There might be some good info or pictures of the structure there from before they cut the top off.

that would be Twinpinion aka John Cappa...
before the top was cut:
http://frontier.net/%7Emystkblu/jppanel.jpg
when it was for sale:
http://frontier.net/%7Emystkblu/jp_panel_4sale.jpg
Brent Hughes of BJs Offroad bought it. John posted a sick picture once of it airborne.
There were a few people up in arms here over the desolation of a "rare panel".
