View Full Version : heater/defrost problem

My fan for the heater/defrost works intermittently. Usually if I hit a bump like a pothole or something, it will start up, so I'm guessing that there is a loose connection somewhere. Does anyone have any suggestions where to start?

I would check the wires going from the motor to the side of the box the motor goes into. Mine has these balast resitors (spelling) there that gives the 3 speeds. The wires are just slip ons. Could be all gunked up ,and a making poor connection.

Also check the ground wire. Should be one going to a screw right by the motor too.

I hope this helps.

Flint, huh, only an hour away, lets go wheelin.
Check the connector at the resistor (on the side of the heater box by the valve cover) they quite often get hot and burn up the connectors causing the problem you describe.

I tried the stuff you guys suggested and still no luck. The Resistor/plug? near the valve covers was kind of gunked up and I cleaned it up the best I could. The three metal prongs were kind of rusted, could that be causing it? The ground wire was secure and looked ok.

As for wheeling Jeepbob, that sounds cool, but I have to get my jeep running a lot better. (I've only owned it 4 months and have never taken it offroad). Where is Caro anyway, is it near Lansing?

Caro is the other way, 1/2 hr east of Saginaw.
The ruat could be a cause, but the resistor is not in use when the heater is in high mode. Did you check the connection at the switch? If any of these parts are bad let me know as I got spares.
As for getting it running better, if ya need help feel free to hollar, also gots lots of parts, including a 78 parts truck.
You could also have bad brushes in the motor itself, which is cause for replacement

I got the fan to work by banging on the fan motor with a pair of pliers. At least I won't have to drive around looking for potholes to hit.

The brushes are sticking, time for a new motor.
