Temp gauge freakin' out

Hey guys...noticed a weird quirk in my temp gauge. The needle will peg, then slowly drift back to around 220 deg. It will bump up to the red zone, then drift somewhere random. I think it's related to revs, because the needle tends to drop back down when I accelerate although it's not a regular thing.

What should I look at? TIA.

An aftermarket gauge.

The temp gauges on our Jeeps are not known to be the most reliable to begin with. You could check the sending unit on the block.

check the connection at the sending unit
