View Full Version : Started my fuel injection install
I am starting this thread to document the installation of a Megasquirt multiport fuel injection system on my 393W. Last night pulled the front clip off and fixed a leaky water pump. Going to try and make the clip easier and quicker to remove for future projects. Look for pics tonight of some progress.
For now here is some snow wheeling we did a couple of weeks ago.

Sweet. That's new for you to start threads before you do something. Normally, it's "hey, look at the awesome work I did to the wag for cheap" followed by numerous praises and compliments. With that said, looking forward to the write up.
Well, the Megasquirt is already assembled and bench tested. Really the only thing left to do is install ECU, intake, O2 sensor, fuel pump, and clean up some wiring. Oh, have to tune it too, that is a major unknown right now but one step at a time.
We are headed to Moab April 5 so this thing has to be on the road and tuned well before then.
Pics. Anyone see my new/unforseen problem?

I just started tuning the MegaSquirt on my 401 a couple weeks ago, it's been SMOOOOOOOOTH sailing. I wish I had more time, otherwise I would have it tuned by now I'm sure. First time, it started up on the first click of the key! I LOVE MEGASQUIRT!
Just follow the guide and you should be okay with tuning. I built my ECM in '05, so I'm gonna upgrade to MS II soon.

Good to hear some positive things about Megasquirt. What are the specs of your set up?
Mine = fuel only for now, MSII, multiport intake off a 91 F250 351W, 24 lb/hr injectors off a 460, bronco external fuel pump, control for electric fan.

Yeah! If you're not careful, you'll spill your beer! ;)
None that I can see really, good luck with it.
Check the last two pics, upper intake will not clear the valve covers. Gonna have to make a spacer that goes inbetween the upper and lower intake.

Can you put a set of shorter valve covers on it? Or are you running higher ratio rocker arms?

Nice pics!
Update:
Had a 3/8 spacer made to raise the upper intake, finished wiring/loom, and finally fired it up. Motor would surge to the point where it would die but I was so excited I did not care.....at least it ran and nothing smoked.
There was a vacuum leak and had to adjust the timing a little. Finally got it to idle and took it for a spin down the road. It is still running extremely lean so more tuning is needed. Pretty stoked as you can imagine.
ECU was controlling the fan like a champ, on at 190 and off at 180 but now is on all the time and won't take changes. I think it is a setting that I fat fingered on my first attempt at tuning.
More pics to come.

yeah I see it. if you let that hedge get any taller it'll block the light coming into your shop. I hope it's not privet. that stuff's a *****.
Still working out issues, it was running lean because I did not put the 14.7 stoichiometric in the required fuel calculation. Re-did that and the Jeep ran well at idle when warm but would die when cold.
To test things out I gave it a huge vacuum leak and it ran up to 1200 RPMs. Ok, now it narrows it down to the IAC controller. Ford uses a 2 wire pulse modulated version that required some mods while building the ECU. I was not sure if I made a mistake buiding it or if I had a hardware failure.
With some more research on the Megasquirt forums if found that some Ford IAC are scaled from 0-100 and others are 100-0. Well, wouldn't you know I had it backwards....changed the table for the duty cyles (in the software) and now have something that was responding.
Few cold starts later and it does exactly what I had hoped.
Been a hell of learning experience but Megasquirt is pretty cool when you get it running and driving. Looking forward to getting my Jeep on some steep inclines now.

Build ECU:eek: Your laptop hooks up to it too?
FAROUT!!! i may learn that stuff someday. Glad you are pioneer!
Laptop connects to the ECU via DB9 serial cable. The software is called MegaTune and provides real time programming and feedback from sensors.

Whoops, I just realized I never got back to you! Sorry! I'm running fuel control only with a TBI unit off a '89/'90 Chevy 454 (2 injectors, 4 simultaneous injections per cycle) with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I'm not sure of the flow rate on the injectors because I didn't see any color codes on them when I ripped them out. I'm getting good numbers with 80lb/hr at 13.5psi so that's probably what they are. That really doesn't matter much with MegaSquirt as you can compensate in the VE table for errors you make in the req. fuel (to a point heh). The fuel pump is an external Bosch #69100 from a late eighties Ford van. I'm still tuning and actually bought a wide-band O2 sensor just because I think it'll come in handy in case I swap cams, heads, whatever later on. I'm gonna install it today.
Glad to see thinks are going relatively smoothly...the knowledge you gain from doing it yourself is definitely worth it, IMHO.
One question - are you running rich at idle? I am, and I think it's because of my cam (I posted a thread about this recently). I'll found out exactly how rich once I get the WB O2 sensor in, but right now I think I'm at around 13-13.5 AFR.

My 02 sensor is not active until the RPM is >1600 so I could not tell you exactly. Guess I could change the settings and look. Are your injectors high impedance? Some people supposidly have had problems with low impedance and megasquirt.....just curious though.
I might be building a similiar setup to yours on another Jeep. What MS and code are you using?

I'm running a MS-1 v2.2 that I built it in 2004/05. I have my O2 sensor kick in at 1300 for now, but it still gives me a reading at idle in Megatune at the bottom of the virtual dash. I'm about 7-8 ticks in the red at idle, otherwise it dies in gear or I have a very bad idle (not a good cam loping idle either). My injectors are low impedance :( about 1.3ohms at 73* F. I updated my code to 2.986/3.00 which is supposed to have better flyback control. I have searched the internet and posted on the MS forums until I was blue in the teeth, but I can't get a straight answer out of anyone. You think there'd be lots of info about MS and a GM TBI. Someone on the Scout forum said that either resistors or the flyback board was needed but they provided no support for their statement. The MS manual says that problems are typically encountered on 4 or more low resistance injectors, I have two. My PWM is at about 65% right now I think. Once I get more road time with it, I'll check out the duty cycle and start measuring the FET driver and resistor temperatures. I guess the whole issue will soon be moot since I'll be upgrading to MS-II (v3 board) when I get the time.
