i personally like a mnual tranny and the 258,but it depends on your intended useage. i think the 258/t176 would be cool in a GW,tho a fair amount of work. but you have both rigs,so youve got basically everything you need. youl need to swap the pedal cluster, engine mount frame brackets, clutch linkage, tranny mounts, driveshafts, steering column(if you dont want the stock shifter to be there any more),pretty much everyting other than the core support-id leave the v8 one there and use a big 3 row v8 radiator-you cna never have too much cooling capacity.not to mention little stuff like the throttle cable, and accessories being in different spots so that their wires need shortened or lengthened.
you could rebuild your 229 and current 360. or you could replace the 360 with a good running one,and swap your 229 for the 208. you cant beat the six for reliability, but you wont win any drag races.depends on how you use it http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

The new Vortec 4200 has no low end power you have to keep it wound up to get any real torque and as it is a totally new design give it a couple of years to find out if it is any good (remember the Quad 4? warrenty nightmare, GM ate a lot of heads and headgasket jobs). Any 4x4 where the front axle runs THROUGH the oil pan I will stay from thank you.
PS as I own both auto and manual tranny mud trucks I'll throw my 2 cents, I really hate manuals when trail riding and bogging or sand hill climbing. With a manual you are never at the right speed when following someone so you are on & off the clutch, with the auto just touch the brakes. In the mud and sand with my auto I can switch gears to get more or less tire speed without losing my momentum, try doing that with a top loader. This comes in handy when running a very long pit.
Just thought I would give my biased opinion.

axle thru the oil pan!? yikes! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif i think ill stay away from that one, too. i havent really read anything on the 4200 yet,but i would agree it needs to be out awhile for the design to be proven. the Quad 4 beng an excellent example, tho the engine is very efficient, and cars equipped with it are pretty quick whe theyre runing right, they did have alot of prollems with vibration and cracked/warped heads in the early versions.
you make good points on autos for sand and mud bogs, and even for trail riding depending on your preferances and type of trails.i ve never found it too dificult to pick the right gear, when crusing along, and even in stop and start "traffic" where the PITA factor is highest,i dont really mind being on and off the clutch.just like being on the highway in a traffic jam in my car-first,second,stop.first second,stop.etc,etc. most people hate that,i dont mind it. gives both feet and both hands somethin to do,ive never really cared to put it in drive and go...
for slow going,a granny 4 speed is cool. with a t18 in first, youre not movin real fast,so you dont have to mess with the clutch that much-youve got alot of control, and alot of leverage to get up or over something that required some throttle with an auto.i love the "put it in first and idle up/over" approach to hills, rocks, logs, etc. you cant really do that with an auto.

My CJ has way to heavy of a clutch and not enough gear to make it a lot of fun on a trail, but the old 3 on the tree tornado 6 powered Waggie is not to bad. As far as throttle control for going up and over something it is just a matter of using the gas and brake at the same time and being in the right gear.
