OK, this is on a CJ (AKA baby Jeep/Barbie Jeep), but please bear with me.

I posted this for a friend who is in dire need of a vehicle that runs (hence the reason for paying $300 for a new carb  ).

So here it is:
"I just bought a weber carburetor 32/36 to match my new 2 barrel intake on my 75 cj with the 258 inline six.

I just got the carb, and now my car is running like crap. I was wondering if anyone could help me.

Following are problems:

First) my car hardly idles. I have to turn the idle speed screw ALL the way in to get it to idle at all

2nd) It is running rich ALL the time. at half throttle to full throttle (especially at full) a solid plume of black exhaust comes straight from the tailpipe. Not so much black smoke at idle, but me eyes still really burn if I stand around it too long.

Initally I thought it was jetted wrong, but after checking it seems I have factory jets.

I have NO vacuum leaks, and my whole ignition system is brand new.

SOOOOO, right now I am thinking it is possibly the float, but I am wondering if that would give the problems I have described.

I desperately need help, as I need to get this done by next week (hence why I am also hestitant to call the place I bought it from and try to have them send me a different carb.

I would be forever in debt to anyone with ANY help regarding this."

Thanks in advance!!!!

Does he have a vacuum guage? I would say his mixture screws are set wrong. Or somebody cranked down on them ruining the needle and seat. My 32/36 runs flawlessly. The float could cause it also, sometimes in shipping they can get hung up. Tapping the float area should free it up though. If adjusting the mixture screws doesnt help at all then I would say float. The way the weber is setup is the mixture adjustment screws are seperate from each other as its a progressive carb. The manual that comes with the 258 32/36 kit has instrucctions on this. I have it in PDF if he needs it.

Yah, the mixture screws don't affect it too much, BUT the mixture screws only adjust at idle anyway.

I have already looked over all the typical instructions with my friend, and to no avail. I am more concerned with it running so rich (I mean "environmentalist's worst nightmare rich") at half-full throttle.

If we can get that fixed, then we can adjust the idle from there.

He doesn't have a vacuum gauge.

I do know everything works as far as vacuum though because for one, he can kill the engine by covering the carb (vacuum leak would cause it to die slower/not at all), and for two it worked fine with stock one barrel and stock carb.

Thankyou very much the reply.

Well I ment a vacuum guage so it can be tuned ;) So you cann see what makes changes and what doesnt. The carb may be faultty, may have to send it back to weber for a replacent.

Is your EGR vacuum line hooked up correctly. Need to have it on ported vacuum from the carb. if you have it on manifold vacuum it will run poorly
