View Full Version : Will it fit? Engine/Trans/Xcase swap
Will the drivetrain from a late 80's Grand Wagoneer fit into my 73 J-4000 pick up. They both have the V8-Auto-Quadratrac set up. The Grand has the Low Range Xcase but mine does not. Will I have to use the whole wiring from the Grand? And can I use the A/C set up from the Grand too?
There is lots i hope to use off the Grand and i can get it for cheap. It runs and drives and the a/c is still cold.
TIA

hye, boyertown isnt far, most of the stuff u can use. if it is a late 80s gwag, the transfercase IS different. it will not have the same rears either. the wag ones will be skinnyer. as for the motor, everything should be the same, and the ac should work on it. i duno botu that though.
The axles are a lot narrower on a Wag and will look pretty funny on a wide track truck. The pumkins are also in different locations so you'll need to swap the entire running gear(trans/tcase/both axles/drive shafts). The Borg-Warner Quadratracs from 73-79 behind the TH400 trans are completely different than the New Process Quadratracs used in 80-82 behind a TF727 trans. No FSJ after 82 used any version of the QT.
What you have in mind will not only look rather odd but will be a lot of work. You'd be better of finding an earlier truck(pre-80) or wide track Chero(pre-80) for a donor for just the parts you need.
When you say late 80's. How late are we talking?
Up through 85 the AC system is a completly independent unit and a pretty straight swap, after that I think it's going to be a bit more involved.
I have an 85 AC unit mounted in my 70 wag, pretty natural looking fit except around the steering column but only you will notice.
I am hoping to use the engine and maybe the trans. I wasn't planning on using the axles. And I think that its an 87 or 89 Waggy for the A/C
Heres another question- how hard will it be to put in the power locks-windows. oh, and another- will the windshield and dash fit into my truck? probably not but i figured i'd ask anyway.
Using an 80+ trans in a 73 you'll also need to use the 80+ tcase because it's a drivers side drop(as is the front diff and a centered rear) where a pre-80 is passenger side drop(pass side front diff and offset to pass side rear) so you'll also need to use the axles from the 80+ also. Personally I'd keep the TH400 and fix it and maybe go to a part-time D20 tcase if you don't want the QT. It's a better trans than the later 727 anyway and to me it isn't worth jumping through major hoops(and money) just to install a weaker trans and tcase because the late GW will have an NP229 tcase which is really expensive to repair. The VC alone is about $400 and a new chain from the dealer is about $300. :(
Another possibility would be to get a 208 tcase from a GM product and use it with your stock axles and the donor 727. The GM 208's are pass side drop. I don't know what you'll need to mate the two though...prolly nothing but not sure.
